The debate over taxing charities’ business income has sparked one of the most heated policy discussions in years. Inland Revenue floated plans to tax commercial profits earned by charities—like Sanitarium—when those profits aren’t clearly tied to charitable purposes. The sector pushed back hard, arguing the proposal was unworkable, unfair, and would burden charities with even more compliance.
