📢 New Work Visa Options for International Graduates in New Zealand📢

Immigration New Zealand will introduce new work visa options for eligible international graduates from 16 November 2026. These changes aim to provide additional pathways for graduates who have completed eligible studies in New Zealand.

📌Key updates include:

👉 A new 6-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa (SGWV) will be introduced for eligible international graduates.

👉 This visa will be available to graduates who have completed eligible NZQCF Level 5 to Level 7 qualifications but do not qualify for a Post Study Work Visa (PSWV).

👉 To be eligible for the SGWV, graduates must have studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks.

👉 English language courses, foundation programmes, and bridging qualifications will not be included under this visa option.

👉 Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) eligibility will also be extended to New Zealand graduate diploma holders who already hold a bachelor’s degree.

👉 The bachelor’s degree may have been completed either in New Zealand or overseas.

👉 For eligible graduate diploma holders, the PSWV may be granted based on the length of time they studied their graduate diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of 1 year.

👉 Students must have been enrolled in and must have completed the entire graduate diploma while studying in New Zealand.

👉 Recognised prior learning, cross-crediting, or similar arrangements will not count toward the study duration requirement.

👉 Graduates must apply for these visa options within 3 months of their relevant student visa expiring.

These updates may provide more opportunities for eligible international graduates to gain work experience in New Zealand after completing their studies.

📢 The Government has extended the English language requirements for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) to include skill level 3 occupations.📢

📌Effective from 1 June 2026, minimum English language requirements will apply to all ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) and National Occupation List skill level 3 occupations under the AEWV.

📌These occupations will be subject to the same English language requirements currently applied to ANZSCO skill level 4 and 5 occupations.

📌 The requirement is intended to demonstrate basic, everyday English proficiency for common situations, rather than a high or advanced level of English.

✅ Applicants may meet the requirement by providing:
👉An acceptable English language test result, or
👉Evidence of citizenship, work experience, or study conducted in English.

📌 This change will affect individuals applying for a new AEWV in a skill level 3 occupation from 1 June 2026 onwards.

✅ An exemption applies to individuals who:
👉Hold an AEWV expiring on or before 1 December 2026, and
👉Apply for a further AEWV in a skill level 3 occupation before their current visa expires.

📌Eligible migrants who may qualify for the exemption will be contacted directly and provided with guidance on how to complete the application process.

📌All other AEWV requirements will remain unchanged.

Our Managing Director recently had the opportunity to engage with 13 students at Vision College in Hamilton, helping to bridge the gap between complex immigration policies and their aspirations to build a future in New Zealand.

During the session, we discussed the current immigration landscape and provided clear, accurate insights to help students make informed decisions about their journey.

Navigating the 2026 Immigration Landscape

The workshop highlighted key areas of New Zealand’s visa framework, ensuring students gained a well-rounded understanding of their pathways:

📌Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV): Understanding how students can transition from study to employment with accredited employers
📌Employer Accreditation & Job Check: How these processes influence visa security and long-term career opportunities
📌amily Visas: Exploring options for bringing loved ones and building a life together in New Zealand

How We Can Help

You don’t have to navigate this journey alone. We simplify complex immigration processes into clear and achievable steps.

Whether you’re a student, graduate, or employer, our team offers strategic and personalised immigration advice to help you build your future in New Zealand.

The Government is introducing the Immigration (Enhanced Risk Management) Amendment Bill to strengthen New Zealand’s immigration system and better manage risks.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said the changes aim to attract skilled migrants while addressing exploitation, serious crime, and immigration breaches. The Bill extends the deportation liability period from 10 to 20 years for serious offenders.

Additional proposals will improve how asylum claims are managed, including:

✅ Allowing authorities to consider crimes committed in New Zealand before refugee status is decided
✅ Addressing bad-faith asylum claims
✅ Managing applicants who miss biometric appointments

These changes aim to ensure fairness, maintain public confidence, and protect genuine refugees, while preventing abuse of the system. The Bill will go through the full parliamentary process in the coming weeks.

As of March 9, 2026

📢Factors That Affect Your Wait Time📢

📌 Application Completeness: Incomplete applications are the #1 cause of delays. If Immigration New Zealand (INZ) asks for more information, your clock "restarts."

📌 Peak Periods: Student and Visitor visa volumes spike between October and March.

📌 Verification Requirements: If your application requires external checks (like offshore work history or medical referrals), it will take longer.

📌 Health & Character: If you have medical conditions or a criminal record that require a "special direction" or further assessment, you can expect significant delays.

📢 Immigration Update: Middle East Travel Disruptions📢

The ongoing situation in the Middle East is affecting international flights, including cancellations and delays through key transit hubs.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) services remain open and operational. INZ is taking a pragmatic and empathetic approach for those impacted by circumstances beyond their control.

If you hold a temporary New Zealand visa (visitor, work, student, or other):

✅ Check your visa expiry date
✅ Check your travel conditions
✅ Confirm your flights before departure

📌 There is no automatic visa extension or grace period.

👉 If you are in New Zealand, you must apply for a new visa before your current visa expires to stay lawfully.
👉 If you are outside New Zealand and your visa expires, you must apply for a new visa before travelling back.
👉 If your visa has already expired and you cannot leave, you may request a Section 61 special case (discretionary and not guaranteed).

INZ understands this is a stressful time. Each case will be considered on its individual merits within existing immigration rules.

Stay informed and take timely action to remain lawful.
