Last week, several of our team supported the Women in Law Association (WILA) Feminist Moot at the University of Waikato.

A huge thank you to Kate Cornegé, Morgan Brady, Natasha Alley, Ella Burney, Jordan Graham and Lauren Aplin for giving their time and expertise as judges across several days of the competition.

The moot problem involved alleged discrimination on the basis of s*x under the NZBORA, which is topical given the recent success in the NZ College of Midwives case. The students presented engaging submissions and displayed strong advocacy skills throughout the competition.

Giving back to the next generation of legal professionals is something we value strongly at Tompkins Wake, and it was fantastic to see our team supporting students as they developed their advocacy and legal reasoning skills.

Congratulations to this year’s winners:
🏆 Rangimarie Croft – Junior Respondent for the Finals, a second-year Bachelor of Laws student from Northland
🏆 Kate Monsma – Junior Appellant, a second-year conjoint Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business student majoring in Economics from Hamilton

A big thank you as well to the students from WILA who did an excellent job of running the competition, and to everyone involved in making the event such a success. Tompkins Wake is proud to continue sponsoring initiatives like the Feminist Moot that help shape the future of the legal profession.

This past weekend, team members from Tompkins Wake took part in the Red Stag Rotorua Marathon, competing in the 5km, 10km, Half Marathon and Full Marathon events.

It was great to see colleagues getting involved, supporting one another, and representing TW outside the office, with plenty of encouragement and a few tired legs at the finish line!

Congratulations to everyone who took part, and to those who supported along the way.

Our Rotorua Property Team recently stepped away from the office for a creative team-building session at Island View Pottery.

Each member crafted their own cup, before collaborating on a larger piece together — a vase made in sections, with pairs creating the base, middle, top and handles. The finished vase is now proudly displayed in our Rotorua reception.

What made the day even more special was learning the story behind the studio. Island View Pottery is run by ceramic artist Sarah Ziessen, who was the 2018 winner of the Tompkins Wake National Contemporary Art Award. Sarah shared how the award helped her establish her studio and grow the pottery classes she now runs for the community.

It was rewarding for the team to see firsthand the impact that support like this can have locally.

This week, we were delighted to host a sold-out Rotorua Business Chamber BA5 event at our Rotorua office, alongside the lovely team from Montana Food & Events.

It was an evening filled with genuine conversations, new connections, and a lively round of BA5 Bingo that sparked plenty of introductions and laughter around the room.

We were also pleased to have partners and team members join us from across our other offices, making it a great opportunity to connect both within the firm and across the Rotorua business community.

A big thank you to the Rotorua Business Chamber, Montana Food & Events, and everyone who came along and helped make it such a memorable evening.

Our Tompkins Wake team enjoyed being part of this special gathering of 100 inspiring women, set against the beautiful backdrop of Lake Rotorua. The Sanctuary provided the perfect space for conversations, new connections, and a real sense of momentum across Rotorua’s business community, hosted at the Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa.

We were proud to once again sponsor the Tompkins Wake Business Awards, held on Saturday 11 October at the Energy Events Centre.

The awards celebrate the innovation, resilience and determination that define Rotorua’s business community. It was fantastic to come together with so many local organisations making a real impact across the region.

A special congratulations to Rotorua Canopy Tours, who made history as the first business in the 34-year history of the awards to win the Supreme Award twice, along with wins in the Manaakitanga Tourism & Hospitality and Kaitiakitanga Environmental Sustainability categories. Their continued focus on people, safety, environmental care and world-class visitor experiences is truly inspiring.

Congratulations to all other winners and finalists, and thank you to the Rotorua Business Chamber for another incredible evening celebrating local success.
