Important AEWV Update – English Language Requirements Expanding from 1 June 2026
From 1 June 2026, applicants for Accredited Employer Work Visas (AEWV) in ANZSCO/NOL Skill Level 3 roles will also need to meet minimum English language requirements.
Currently, this only applies to Skill Level 4 and 5 roles.
The change is aimed at helping migrants better integrate into New Zealand workplaces, understand their rights, and communicate concerns if needed.
Key points:
• Applies to new AEWV applications for Skill Level 3 roles from 1 June 2026
• Does NOT apply to Job Change applications
• Seasonal visa categories remain exempt
• Current AEWV holders will not be affected while their visa remains valid
• Transitional exemptions will apply for some existing AEWV holders, including those whose visas expire on or before 1 December 2026
• Applicants who already provided English evidence in a previous AEWV application may also be exempt
Important: The new rule will still apply to Skill Level 3 AEWV applications lodged after 1 June 2026, even if the Job Check was approved before that date.
If you are an employer recruiting overseas staff, or a migrant planning a future AEWV application, now is the time to prepare ahead.
