Growth category investors will soon be able to include a small amount of philanthropy as part of their investment.

The Government today announced a targeted change to the Active Investor Plus Visa to support high value investment.

From 1 June 2026, new applicants in the Growth category will be able to include philanthropy, capped at 20 percent of their total investment.

This keeps the focus on investments that grow New Zealand’s economy, while allowing a small portion to support eligible charities and conservation projects.

Safeguards will ensure philanthropic investments are genuine, meet eligibility requirements, and do not personally benefit applicants.

More information, including the Minister’s announcement, is available on the Immigration New Zealand website.

"Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is aware of recent phone scams, with callers pretending to be from INZ and using New Zealand mobile numbers. These calls are not genuine.

Immigration New Zealand will never contact you by phone asking for payments.

Scammers often claim there is an urgent problem with your visa to create pressure or fear. They may ask you to “press 1” or speak to an operator. In some cases, callers have demanded payment, requested personal information such as passport or bank details, or threatened legal action if you do not comply.

These calls do not come from INZ, and we urge people not to engage." - You can read more about this on the Immigration New Zealand Website.

Will you be affected by these
changes?

Changes to employment conditions for people with
open work visas came into effect from 20 April 2026.

These changes are designed to provide clarity about
what work is allowed under open work visas, helping
migrants to better understand their rights and
responsibilities. Clear and consistent visa conditions
reduce uncertainty and support safer, fairer, and more
compliant work practices for both migrants and
employers.

New Zealand website.

"The Samoan Quota and Pacific Access Category are 2 longstanding visa categories that allow people from the Pacific to become permanent residents in New Zealand. Both schemes operate through an annual ballot.

This year, up to 1,100 Samoan citizens, 250 Tongan and 250 Fijian citizens and 75 Kiribati and 75 Tuvaluan citizens will be invited to apply for New Zealand residence. You can register for the annual ballot online."

"The 2026 Samoan Quota and Pacific Access Category ballots will close on 30th April 2026 at 17:00 New Zealand Standard Time (NZST).

The Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota draw takes place on 20 May 2026."

From 20 April 2026, Immigration New Zealand will introduce updated employment conditions for people holding open work visas in New Zealand.

These changes are intended to make it clearer what types of work are allowed under open work visas. The goal is to help migrants better understand their visa conditions while supporting safer and more compliant employment practices for both migrants and employers.

If you currently hold an open work visa, or are considering applying for one, it is important to understand how these changes may affect what work you can legally undertake in New Zealand.
