Te Ao Marama/ Le Ao Mārama - Law School Leavers undergraduate Scholarship... Up to10k

MĀORI AND PASIFIKA FUTURES IN LAW SCHOOL-LEAVERS SCHHOLARSHIP

have launched the Te Ao Mārama—Le Ao Malama—First Light Māori and Pasifika Futures in Law School Leavers Scholarship. Under the scholarship, First-in-family undergraduate Law students can get up to $10,000 per year for the duration of their undergraduate studies.

This scholarship will also provide wraparound support in the form of mentorship, work experience, and internships with law firms, courts, and the judiciary, for all students who apply, regardless of whether they are successful.

Professor Mark Hickford, Hon Dame Luamanuvao Winnie Laban, and members of the judiciary; including Hon Justice Sir Joseph (Joe) Williams, Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, Chief District Court Judge, Hon Heemi Taumaunu, and Hon Judge Malosi; have spearheaded this campaign to make a difference to the lives of young people who may not have the chance to attend Law School.

The aim over the next 4-5 years is to eventually provide around $25,000 per year for a deserving student to ease the financial burden whilst studying. Applications for study in 2023 need to be received by 15 October 2022.

The Pacific Building Affordable Homes Fund is now open 🎉

The government has started a new fund to help more Pacific Peoples realise their dream of owning their own home.

The Pacific Lawyers Association extends its warmest congratulations to past President and PLA founder, her Honour Judge Ida Malosi on her appointment as Principal Youth Court Judge. She becomes the first Pacific Head of Bench in Aotearoa's history.

Judge Malosi has spent her legal and judicial career primarily in South Auckland. She was a founding partner of the all-Māori and Pasifika women law firm King Alofivae Malosi, specialising in family law and youth justice, and has sat in the Family and Youth Courts in South Auckland, following her appointment to the District Court bench in 2002.

Judge Malosi established the Pasifika Youth Courts in Māngere and Avondale. In 2013 Judge Malosi was seconded to Samoa as a Judge of the Supreme Court and established the Family Court and Family Violence Courts in Samoa as part of that secondment. She was then Executive Judge of the Manukau Court before being appointed as National Executive Judge in 2021.

Judge Malosi will commence her appointment as Principal Youth Court Judge in November following the retirement of Judge John Walker who has held the role since 2016.

Please join us in congratulating her Honour on this momentous achievement.

Mānawatia a Matariki e hoa mā!

Today we celebrate Matariki ✨ Mānawatia a Matariki means welcome, honour or celebrate Matariki. This phrase was developed by Rangi Matamua and Hēmi Kelly.

says, “I think it’s important that if we’re going to celebrate something that comes out of a Māori context, we use the correct terms and the correct language around the celebration.”

Kia ora koutou
Whilst you may not have seen us in person for a while, we've had a lot happening in our Chambers over the past few months with some of our colleagues moving on to different parts of the country, and others moving in.

Late last year, we bid farewell to Mel Maplesden who has returned to Nelson, and to our only resident male, Kingi Snelgar, who has since moved into central Auckland.

We have welcomed Stormie Waapu and Corin Merrick back to Chambers. Both Stormie and Corin undertake Family Court and Youth Court appointments with Corin also involved in consultancy work.
