The New Zealand Law Foundation is now in recess but some activities and scholarships will continue during its recess. Refer to the website www.lawfoundation.org.nz for more information. This page will continue to provide awareness of the research and scholarships made possible by the Law Foundation's grants. The recess is temporary and eventually the Law Foundation will return to active granting a

fter its capital fund builds up. The Law Foundation awarded grants and scholarships annually from February 1992 to July 2020. It supported legal scholarship, legal research projects and helped public understanding of legal issues in New Zealand. During that time it was New Zealand's sole body dedicated to providing legal research funding. It supported quality research that was of true value to New Zealand and its legal profession.

SIGNIFICANT NEW REPORT: REMOVING DISABLING EXPERIENCES
In 2017 Warren Forster won the Law Foundation's prestigious International Research Fellowship with a bold aim to work out how to realise Sir Owen Woodhouse's original vision of an ACC scheme that does not discriminate based on the cause of disability, a vision consistent with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. His final report releases today.
"This report provides a road map for achieving this goal within a decade and sets out a simple choice for our future. We can become world leaders again in the field of care and support for all our people, or we can choose to perpetuate the fragmented, incomplete, and broken system that history has shown does not work."

MAJOR REPORT RELEASED CALLING FOR OCEANS REFORM
EDS has published a report on the future of Aotearoa New Zealand’s oceans management system. MAKING GANG LAWS IN A PANIC
New research was released today from Jarrod Gilbert, University of Canterbury which examines NZ’s most significant legislative thrust targeting gangs, which occurred in the mid 1990s, and it looks at the efficacy of the gang laws by measuring the political intent of the measures against their actual use. The results are a damning indictment on a focus of politics over sound policy. These finding are particularly important right now because of the striking parallels between the gang scene then and now, meaning another legislative thrust against gangs could be likely before the next election.

IMPORTANT CHARITIES LAW REFORM REPORT RELEASED
The 2019 NZLF International Research Fellow, Sue Barker, has released her important report dedicated to the question “What does a world-leading framework of charities law look like?”
The report makes 70 recommendations, including that the review of the Charities Act is transferred to an independent body, such as the New Zealand Law Commission, for an independent, first principles (and ideally multi-disciplinary) review taking into account the wider legal framework applicable to charities.
Sue says, “Ultimately it comes down to the type of society we want to live in – it is very important that we get this right.”
