Congratulations Odette, you will bring so much to NZ Rowing in this role. For those who don't know about Odette's background ... in her own words:
"My name is Odette Cottle (Sceats), and I am a commercial lawyer based in Hamilton. I previously represented New Zealand in age group rowing teams.
My experience in rowing has shaped my approach to both sport and professional life. I value using data and results to inform decisions, and I thrive in an environment where there is careful planning and a clear criteria. Whether on the water or in leadership roles, I am dedicated to fairness, transparency, and ensuring that every decision is grounded in evidence and best practice.
As a partner at Norris Ward McKinnon, I have developed experience in leadership, governance, and strategic decision-making. I also sit on the boards of two organisations that are very different in their focus and operations. This has broadened my perspective and ability to adapt my approach as needed. In these roles, I manage sensitive discussions, interpret complex information, and make evidence-based decisions. I place great importance on ensuring all voices are heard and respected, and I work to contribute to robust, transparent processes that deliver fair and effective outcomes.
I am genuinely excited about the opportunity to serve as an elite selector. Having experienced the selection process myself, I understand how significant these decisions are for athletes. My goal is to ensure that every athlete feels their performance has been assessed objectively. I am committed to making the process fair and transparent, so athletes understand how and why decisions have been made, even when those decisions are challenging."
