📢 Important changes to New Zealand student visa settings take effect from 27 October 2026.

These changes aim to support the integrity of student visa pathways and improve the experience of visa holders.

📌 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴?

🔹 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀-𝗯𝘆-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
Work rights will align with standard student visa settings: up to 25 hours per week while studying and full-time during scheduled vacations. This applies to new Master’s students who apply on or after 27 October 2026.

🔹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆
For students who would usually receive one month of visa validity after their course ends, this will be extended to two months after the course end date.
Visas that would usually expire on 31 March will remain unchanged.

🔹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Immigration officers may request evidence of English-language ability, such as an approved test, if they have concerns about whether an applicant's ability is consistent with their proposed study.

🔹 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀
Visa processing may be suspended while concerns about an education provider’s compliance with immigration or education requirements are being investigated.

Eligible travellers can continue to request an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) and travel from Australia to New Zealand while Immigration New Zealand evaluates the trial.

📌 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄:

🔹 The initial 12-month trial period ends on 3 November 2026.

🔹 There is no immediate change for eligible travellers.

🔹 Decisions about the next steps will be made after the evaluation.

🔹 Further information will be provided once those decisions have been made.

🇳🇿🇮🇳 NEW ZEALAND IMMIGRATION UPDATE | INDIA–NZ FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement came into effect on 20 October 2026, introducing new visa commitments for Indian nationals.

Here are the key pathways to know about:

🔹 India Skilled Work Visa – For eligible Indian nationals working in specified occupations, subject to the applicable requirements and visa caps.

🔹 India Iconic Work Visa – For eligible Indian nationals in specified occupations, subject to the relevant criteria and limits.

🔹 Working Holiday Scheme – A new scheme for eligible Indian nationals aged 18–30 is planned.

🔹 Post-study and in-study work rights – The agreement also includes commitments relating to eligible Indian students and graduates.

⚠️ Important conditions to understand:

▪️ Family members: Partners and children cannot be included or supported under these visas, unless they qualify for their own visas.

▪️ Residence pathway: Work undertaken on these visas does not count towards a residence application under the applicable Skilled Migrant Category rules.

▪️ Eligibility and caps: Applicants must meet the relevant visa requirements. Places may be limited, and meeting some criteria does not guarantee visa approval.

Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) is now available as a provider under the Funds Transfer Scheme (FTS), giving eligible students more choice alongside ANZ.

The FTS provides a secure way for eligible students to transfer and access their funds while studying in New Zealand.

📌 The scheme is currently available to eligible students from China, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

🏫 For university and polytechnic students: BNZ and ANZ are available under the scheme.

🏫 For Private Training Establishment (PTE) students: ANZ remains available, as BNZ is not currently offering FTS to students outside universities and polytechnics.

📢 NEW INZ UPDATE: Minimum Age Introduced for Partnership-Based Visas
From 25 September 2026, new age and evidence requirements apply to dedicated partnership-based visa categories.

👫 Both partners must be 18 or older when the application is made.

📄 Partnership evidence must also be from after both partners turned 18.

Evidence from before both people were 18 will not be used by Immigration New Zealand to assess the relationship.

💙 Which visas are affected?
The changes apply to partnership-based:
• Visitor Visas
• Work Visas
• Residence Visas
• Culturally Arranged Marriage Visitor Visas

This includes partnerships with a New Zealand citizen, resident, work visa holder or student visa holder.

⚠️ Important for couples:
For partnership-based residence, the 12-month living-together period can only start counting once both partners are 18 or older.
