y Welsh Shirley Welsh was a Human Rights Lawyer in South Africa before she emigrated to New Zealand 18 years ago. Since being in New Zealand, she has helped people resolve their disputes by assisting them to negotiate a resolution or by making a binding decision for them. She has been a Reviewer of ACC decisions, a Mediator of ACC disputes and a Complaint’s Investigator into ACC’s conduct; a Referee of commercial disputes in the Disputes Tribunal, a Tenancy Adjudicator of Landlord/Tenant disputes in the Tenancy Tribunal. She has also been a Visiting Justice in the Christchurch Prisons where she heard charges and appeals against prison discipline. However, a move to Dunedin a year ago gave Shirley an opportunity to pursue a longstanding passion of hers - to helping people confront their fears about dying and prepare for the end of their lives. She believes that preparing a will, appointing someone to act as your enduring power of attorney, making a living will and making plans for your care at the end of your life are significant decisions. They should not be made in a hurry or left for a time when you are least able to make them. Shirley hosts the Dunedin Death Cafe to provide a place for people to talk openly about death as well as The Final Curtain, a podcast on Dunedin Community Radio, in which people tell their stories about death and dying. LLB, LLM and Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Dispute Resolution). She is admitted to practice as an attorney in South Africa and a Solicitor/Barrister in New Zealand. Since 2019 Shirley has worked as an Associate Solicitor at Craig Paddon Lawyer specialising in Wills , Enduring Powers Of Attorney and all matters of particular concen to the Elderly .
