Te taiao is not separate from us; we are part of it. 🌏✨

Earth Day is a reminder of what our tūpuna have always known. Our taiao is linked to our whakapapa. Whenua, wai, and taiao are taonga that require care, reciprocity, and kaitiakitanga.

For Māori, sustainability isn’t a new concept. As tangata whenua, our role is not just to exist on the land, but to care for it, to uphold our obligations as kaitiaki, and to ensure that those who come after us inherit a whenua that is thriving.

As our whenua nourishes us, in return, we must ask ourselves: what can we do for the whenua?

From māra kai practices to rongoā, from kaitiakitanga to understanding our maramataka, our tūpuna passed down knowledge that teaches us how to live in balance with te taiao. This Earth Day, let’s not just talk about sustainability. Let’s practice it, protect it, and honour the mātauranga that guides us.

Stay tuned for our series of taiao content.
