When Raff and I started our plumbing and heating business in London, we entered an industry that was heavily male dominated

Over the years, there were several moments where people made assumptions about me before I’d even spoken

Often I was mistaken for admin support
Often people assumed the business decisions sat elsewhere
And occasionally, people said the quiet part out loud

At the time, I rarely reacted

I was too busy building the business, raising children and trying to survive the pressures of entrepreneurship.

But looking back now, I realise those experiences taught me some of the most valuable leadership lessons of my career

This article is not about resentment

It’s about assumptions, resilience and why you should never underestimate someone based on how they look, sound or present themselves

I’ve shared one of those stories below . . .

When Raff and I first started our plumbing and heating business in London, it was just the two of us. Like many small business owners in the early years, we did everything ourselves.
