I gave some legal advice to well known cartoonist Malcolm Evans. I told him no fee because I couldn't do much other than direct him to someone else ... but he decided to pay me anyway - with the attached - which makes me very happy and I am going to frame it and put it in my office!

I am missing something so educate me.
It seems to me that these two officers behaviour was outrageous. The fact that the youth may have broken the law and had underage s*x is irrelevant. Apparently they detained him without charging him and threatened him with 14 years imprisonment without allowing him independent legal advise. They then effectively deported him even though he is a citizen. They then detained him again when he lawfully returned to New Zealand.
This was vigilante justice akin to a lynching.
I hope that well meaning officers such as these never decide to teach me a lesson. Of course, I'm safe because I am a white middle aged middle-class male. I know that they have no right to detain me without charging me. I know that I am entitled to speak to an independent person. I know that as a citizen I cannot be deported. I know that I am allowed to return to my country without being detained upon arrival.
You who see the outcome as some sort of victory ought to be ashamed. Noble cause corruption is still corruption.

Two police officers have been found not guilty of kidnapping.
