BIG NEWS FOR ASPIRING CHEFS…

Dreaming of turning your passion for cooking into a long-term future in New Zealand?

The addition of the Chef occupation to New Zealand’s Trade Technician List has created exciting opportunities for international students and hospitality professionals.

Here’s what the pathway can look like:
- Study a recognised Cookery or Professional Chef qualification in New Zealand
- Gain industry-relevant skills and practical experience
- Secure employment as a Chef with an eligible New Zealand employer
- Meet the requirements
- Progress towards New Zealand Residence

This means that for many students, a Chef qualification is no longer just about getting a job, it can be a pathway towards building a long-term life and career in New Zealand.

With strong demand across the hospitality sector, skilled chefs continue to play a vital role in supporting restaurants, hotels, cafes and tourism businesses throughout the country.

Every student’s situation is different, and choosing the right course, provider and immigration strategy from the start can make a significant difference to future residence opportunities.
Thinking about studying Cookery in New Zealand and exploring a potential pathway to residence? Get in touch to discuss your options.

BIG NEWS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN NEW ZEALAND

Immigration New Zealand has announced significant changes that will reshape post-study opportunities for international students.

- Introduction of a new 6-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
- Expanded Post Study Work Visa eligibility for certain Graduate Diploma (Level 7) graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree
- More flexibility for graduates to transition into skilled employment and longer-term visa pathways

These changes reflect New Zealand’s continued focus on attracting and retaining skilled talent while aligning migration pathways with labour market needs.
The difference between selecting the right course and the wrong course could significantly impact future work and residence opportunities.

As Licensed Immigration Advisers, we encourage students and education providers to carefully review these changes and seek professional advice before making study decisions.

The New Zealand immigration landscape continues to evolve and those who stay informed will be best positioned to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

Important: These changes will come into effect from November 2026, giving students and education providers time to plan ahead.
