Owners of Hino vehicles affected by alleged misconduct have reached a $10.9 million proposed settlement in the Hino Motors Action.

The settlement is subject to court approval and is being advanced in the form of a class action. No admission of liability has been made as part of the settlement.

Shine Lawyers New Zealand commenced the action on behalf of affected vehicle owners, alleging that Hino Motors and related entities misreported engine performance data concerning emissions and fuel efficiency.

The claim also alleged that Hino failed to meet its obligations under New Zealand consumer protection laws by not adequately disclosing these issues. Hino denies these allegations.

Today marks 15 years since the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake.

This is a day of significant impact for so many in our community who were personally affected by the quake.

As we pause to remember those we lost, we remain committed to pressing decision-makers to act now and settle claims for homeowners who continue to have unresolved earthquake damage.

These prolonged cases only add to the grief and trauma suffered by homeowners, many of whom we continue to support.

Shine’s Director, Mobeena Hills, and Special Counsel, Tiffany Sauni, recently attended the Pacific Lawyers Association End of Year Dinner at Tote on Ascot in Auckland.

The annual event is a key highlight on the calendar, bringing together lawyers and dignitaries from across Aotearoa New Zealand to celebrate the year’s achievements and the strength of the Pacific legal community.

Images feature members of the University of Canterbury Pacific Students Association, whom Tiffany has proudly mentored over the past few years, an inspiring example of the importance of supporting and uplifting the next generation of Pacific leaders.

📍 Mobeena is Director of Shine Lawyers NZ, based out of our Christchurch office, and has been with us for almost a decade now.

🤝 Mo says the people are what she loves most about working at Shine, and the opportunity to give a voice to her clients and obtain justice for them is one she doesn't take for granted. ⚖️

❓ Where did you grow up?
🎙️ Suva, Fiji. Our school was across the road from the beach – something we definitely took for granted at the time! Fun fact: we didn’t have live TV until I was 11 years old, but I have the best memories from growing up. A colleague reminded me to also mention my high school years in Hamilton. I am a proud graduate of the now defunct Melville High where I made lifelong friends. Whenever we catch up, we always manage to pick up where we leave off, but the conversations are getting more mature as time goes on as we deal with careers, parenting, and grief.

❓ When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
🎙️ A journalist or if I’m really honest an MTV host! My undergraduate degree is in journalism. I have a passion for social justice issues. It’s in my blood. My father was a lawyer and politician, and my grandfather was also a leader of the same party. Law was the natural next step for me – and I haven’t looked back. Anyone keen on me hosting a podcast as a side hustle?

❓ What was your first job?
🎙️ I worked at a local leagues club! I loved connecting with retirees and people from all walks of life, particularly in the bingo room. I didn't know this at the time, but this helped prepare me for law and deal with a diverse range of clients.

❓ What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given (personally or professionally)?
🎙️ ‘This too shall pass’ (for those tough cases). Also, my husband has borrowed a Robb Stark quote which really resonated with me, along the lines of “You don’t have to choose, you can be both” (if you know, you know).

❓ What is the #1 place/activity you recommend to people visiting your city/town?
🎙️ Hanmer Springs. It’s about an hour north from Christchurch, and is a lovely alpine village with thermal hot pools and Conical Hill, an easy hike with stunning views at the top.
