Immigration New Zealand has confirmed a new hybrid selection model for Parent Resident Visa EOIs, taking effect ๐Ÿ“ ๐Ž๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”.

Under the new model, around 90% of EOIs will be selected in the order they were received, with the remaining 10% still selected by ballot. This is a real shift from the current system, where all EOIs in the pool are selected purely at random, giving applicants who have been waiting longer a clearer pathway forward.

We support this more balanced approach. For many migrant families, parents and grandparents are central to daily life, providing care, support and stability while families work and build their lives here. Recognising that role is also a recognition of how strong family units help New Zealand's communities and workforce thrive.

This change is particularly significant because the recently introduced Parent Boost Visitor Visa has not been a realistic option for many families. Its high application fee, demanding income or funds thresholds, and substantial ongoing health insurance costs have placed it beyond the financial reach of many migrants. A fairer Parent Resident Visa selection system therefore remains essential for families seeking a genuine and permanent pathway to reunification.

If you already have an EOI in the pool and it is not due to expire before 5 October 2026, you do not need to take any action. Your EOI will transition automatically to the new system.

If your EOI is due to expire before 5 October 2026, you will need to submit a new EOI to retain your place in the process.

The annual cap remains at 2,500 visas each financial year. From 5 October 2026, EOIs will also no longer expire after two years, although applicants will need to confirm every two years that they wish to remain in the pool. There is no fee for this confirmation.

Applicants and sponsors must still meet all existing Parent Resident Visa requirements.

Further details are available on the Immigration New Zealand website, linked in the comments section below.

If you are unsure how these changes may affect an existing or proposed EOI, consider seeking immigration advice.

Buying your first home in New Zealand is such a special milestone, and weโ€™re grateful to have been part of our clientsโ€™ journey to their lovely first home in Christchurch.

It was a joy to see the couple support each other throughout the process, balancing hectic schedules, household responsibilities and the unexpected challenges along the way. We admired their focus, efficiency and grace under pressure throughout the whole matter.

We're grateful for the privilege of getting to know such good people. Genuinely one of the kindest couples we've had the pleasure of working with.

Everyone's path looks different, whether buying a first home or exploring renting, investing, relocating or simply planning for what comes next. It's rewarding to work alongside people build a future that suits their goals.

Moments like this are what make this work meaningful. Behind every approval is a person who has worked hard, planned carefully and trusted us to help guide them through a process that can feel overwhelming and uncertain.

Thorough preparation and identifying potential issues at the earliest possible opportunity are key to managing risks, addressing potential concerns and putting an application in the strongest possible position for approval. This outcome reflects exactly that.

For skilled employment, a key aspect is meeting Immigration New Zealandโ€™s (INZ) requirements regarding the claimed occupation, including demonstrating that the employment is substantially consistent with the relevant 6-digit Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) occupation, or satisfying a" substantial ANZSCO match" assessment and/or a โ€œsuitably qualifiedโ€ assessment, where undertaken at the immigration officerโ€™s discretion.

The Law Commission has released its Final Report on the review of the Human Rights Act, recommending that protections be expanded to explicitly cover gender identity and innate variations of s*x characteristics (inters*x traits).

The proposed changes aim to remove uncertainty in the law and bring New Zealand in line with other countries that already provide clear protections for transgender, non-binary and inters*x people.
