I fully endorse the timeless wisdom of Ramjethmalani, one of greatest lawyers India has produced. His one word “architect” speaks volumes.
The law is not an end in itself, it is a living instrument of justice.
A lawyer who knows only the law may understand rules, but not fairness/justice, not people, and not the consequences of those rules in real life.
As Jethmalani ji, rightly said, lawyers must be architects and builders of the nation. We are not mere interpreters of statutes, we are custodians of justice, defenders of rights, and contributors to the social, political and economic fabric of our society.
A true lawyer must have wider qualities including but not limited to the following:
• a thinker, not just a technician;
• a problem-solver, not just an advisor;
• a person of integrity, not just intelligence;
• commercially aware, yet ethically grounded;
• courageous in standing for what is right, even when it is not easy.
Lawyers must bridge law with humanity, law with fairness, and law with progress. When we rise above simply “knowing the law” and instead use it to serve people and society with the knowledge of practice of law, we truly honour our profession, and play our part in building a stronger nation.
