If you:
✅ submitted your application before 31 May 2026, you do not need to apply again
✅ already started a draft application in the older system, you can still finish and submit it there

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮 (𝗔𝗘𝗪𝗩) 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗭? From 1 June 2026, more jobs will now require proof of basic English. This means if you apply for a new AEWV after this date, you need to show you can use everyday English in normal work and daily situations.

👉 What kind of English is needed?
This is not advanced or university-level English. It is focused on basic communication such as:
🔹 understanding instructions
🔹 speaking with people at work
🔹 handling everyday situations

👉 How can you prove your English?
🔹 Through an accepted English test
🔹 Citizenship from certain countries
🔹 Previous study or work in English

There is also an exemption for some current AEWV holders whose visas expire on or before 1 December 2026, if they apply again before their current visa ends. For many migrants, this update means planning ahead will become more important before applying for a new AEWV role.

👉 Work as a self-employed
🔹 Contractors work under a contract for services and they handle their own taxes. Contractors enjoy independence but don’t have the same employee rights, like holiday pay.
🔹 Sole traders run their own business, manage all finances, carry full responsibility for expenses and compliance.

👉 Employed
🔹 Permanent employees (full-time or part-time) have paid leave, sick days and legal protections.
🔹 Fixed-term employees are hired for a set period or project. Rights are similar to permanent roles but the employment ends when the term does.
🔹 Seasonal employees are common in industries like agriculture, where work ends when the season finishes.
🔹 Casual employees work on an as-needed basis with no guaranteed hours. They still receive “pay as you go” holiday pay if they meet the criteria.

👉 Learning and training roles
🔹 Apprentices and trainees earn while they learn, with full employment rights like holiday pay and sick leave.

👉 Other options
🔹 Triangular employment means you’re employed by one company but work under the direction of another, such as a staffing agency.
🔹 Volunteers give their time and skills without payment. They are not entitled to employee benefits.
🔹 Internships can be paid or unpaid. Paid interns have similar rights to employees, while unpaid interns are treated more like volunteers.

👉 Before you fly
Make sure your visa or NZeTA is approved, your passport details match your visa (very important), you complete your New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) online (www.travellerdeclaration.govt.nz). The NZTD is free and can be submitted digitally 1 day before travel. Airlines may also ask to see proof of your visa at check-in, so keep it accessible on your phone or printed if you prefer.

👉 At passport control
Once you land, you’ll head to passport control. Depending on your passport, you may:
🔹 Use the automated eGate system
🔹 Or speak with a border officer

If you hold a work visa, you may be asked simple questions about your employer or role. For most travellers, this stage is straightforward when documentation is in order.

👉 Customs and Biosecurity
NZ is serious about protecting its environment. You will be asked about food, outdoor equipment, plant or animal products. If you are unsure about an item, declaring it is always the safest option. Border officers simply assess whether it can enter the country. Some luggage may be selected for routine xray screening or sniffer dogs check your bags.
