From 14 September 2026, a local, face-to-face Visa Application Centre (VAC) opens in Nuku'alofa, run by VFS Global on behalf of Immigration New Zealand. From that date, all paper visa applications must be submitted here.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁
Along with your usual visa application fee, there's a separate VAC service fee:
🔹 TOP 86 (Tongan paʻanga) for most applications or TOP 43 for RSE visa applications.
🔹 Scanning your passport can also be done at the centre, for an extra fee.

The VAC handles the admin side only. It can't give immigration advice or influence your visa decision. That part still rests with Immigration New Zealand.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀
to apply for residence through the Skilled Migrant Category, you need to earn a certain number of points (from things like your job, salary, qualifications and work experience).

Since August 2026, if you already reach 6 points without needing any points from work experience (say through qualification or a high salary) your application now moves to the front of the queue.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝘁:
🔹 recent graduates with in-demand qualifications
🔹 high-salary professionals
🔹 and younger skilled migrants building their careers.

That said, "prioritised" doesn't change who's eligible. The core points system and requirements stay the same.

From 7 September 2026, Samoan Quota Resident Visa applicants will submit their paper applications, all supporting documents and application fee directly to the Apia Visa Application Centre (VAC).

🔹 This update only changes where you drop off your documents, not who decides your visa and not how your application is assessed.

👉 What's happening around Working Holiday Visas?
The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) works on a yearly cap for each country. Right now, 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 "𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱" on the official Home Affairs page, only San Marino and Turkiye are currently open.

China, India and Vietnam don't use a simple cap at all, they go through a selection, where you register interest and wait to be selected. Indonesia is expected to move to this same ballot system later in 2026.

A paused cap isn't necessarily bad news, it can reopen later in the same year, once the Department reviews demand. So if your country shows "paused," it's worth checking back (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/what-we-do/whm-program/status-of-country-caps) rather than assuming your chance is gone.

👉 The good news too
🔹 From 1 July 2026, applicants from Cyprus, Finland, Germany and South Korea can now apply up to age 35.
🔹 Uruguay's yearly cap has also increased to 1,500 places.
🔹 And Luxembourg applicants no longer need a Letter of Support, which means one less document to chase.

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based English language proficiency test that is now scored differently. Because of this, NZ and Australia updated the scores they ask for too. So if you saw a number online that looks a little old, that's exactly why.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲
✅ New Zealand
Student Visa: usually between 50–58, depending on your school
Skilled Migrant Visa: 58 overall, with no single section below 54
Partner and Dependent Visas: 36 overall

✅ Australia
Student Visa (Subclass 500): 47 overall (up from the old 42)
Skilled Migration Visas: 50 gets you in the door, but 65 or 79 earns you extra points toward residence
Partner Visas: around 30 overall (functional English level)

We reckon the higher score is genuinely useful, it opens more university options, can add valuable points to your residence application. Think of your PTE prep less as "passing a test" and more as building a skill you'll actually use at work, at school and with your new neighbours.
