🇦🇺 AUSTRALIA STUDENT VISA : MAJOR NEW RULES FROM 2 OCTOBER 2026

Australia has introduced major Student Visa reforms aimed at reducing visa hopping and strengthening the integrity of the international education system.

📌 KEY CHANGES EFFECTIVE FROM 2 OCTOBER 2026:

🔴 12-MONTH COURSE/PROVIDER TRANSFER RESTRICTION

International students in non-school courses generally must remain in their principal course for 12 months before transferring to another education provider.

➡️ This increases the previous restriction from 6 months to 12 months.

➡️ Transfers may still be possible in exceptional circumstances or where a provider/course ceases to be registered.

🔴 DEPENDANTS ARE NOW HIGHLY RESTRICTED

Most international students can no longer include their spouse/partner or dependent children in a new Student Visa application.

❌ Students can no longer add family members later as “subsequent entrants.”

✅ Limited exemptions apply, including certain:
• PhD students
• Pacific and ASEAN nationals
• Australian/foreign government-sponsored students
• Certain eligible existing family situations

🔴 ONshore STUDENT VISA APPLICATIONS ARE NOW RESTRICTED

Most temporary visa holders must be outside Australia when applying for a Student Visa and must also be outside Australia when the visa is granted.

This affects many people attempting to switch to a Student Visa while already in Australia.

Examples include affected holders of certain:
• Visitor visas
• Working Holiday Maker visas
• Skills in Demand visas
and other temporary visas.

🔴 CURRENT STUDENTS ALSO FACE NEW RULES

A current Student Visa holder who wants another Student Visa while in Australia must generally meet a limited exemption.

Possible exemptions include:
✅ Genuine progression to a higher AQF-level course
✅ PhD study
✅ Primary/secondary school
✅ Up to 12 additional months to complete the same main course
✅ Provider default
✅ Certain government-sponsored students

🔴 HIGHER EDUCATION → LOWER-LEVEL VET PATHWAY CLOSED

Students will no longer be able to come to Australia for Higher Education and then use an onshore transfer to move down to VET as a pathway.

➡️ Genuine course progression remains possible, but the new system is designed to prevent downward course progression used for visa purposes.

🔴 NEW STUDENT VISA TRANSFER STREAM FROM 1 JULY 2027

From 1 July 2027, students seeking to change education providers after arriving in Australia will use a new Student Visa transfer stream.

The new system will generally allow transfers at the same AQF level or higher, subject to the applicable requirements.

Your course level, provider, visa status, application location and family circumstances can all affect what options are available to you.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

🔴 Family/Dependants मा नयाँ restriction:
धेरै international students ले अब spouse/partner र children लाई Australia ल्याउन नपाउने व्यवस्था प्रस्ताव गरिएको छ। But Pacific & ASEAN countries तथा केही PhD students का लागि exceptions रहनेछन्।

🔴 Visa Hopping मा कडाई:
एक course सकेपछि बारम्बार same वा lower-level course मा enrill हुने र visa extend गर्ने practice मा कडाइ हुनेछ।

Student → Graduate → Skilled pathway जस्ता genuine progression लाई visa hopping मानिने छैन।

🔴 No Further Stay Condition:
Future Visitor visas मा “No Further Stay” condition राखिने घोषणा गरिएको छ।

➡️ Visitor visa लिएर Australia गएपछि त्यहीँ बसेर अर्को visa category मा switch गर्ने बाटो थप restricted हुनेछ।

यी आज घोषणा गरिएका policy changes हुन्। सबै provisions आजैदेखि लागू भएको भन्ने चाँहि होइन;

How much fund to show for your Australian visa application?

According to Australian visa policy, you must provide an evidence of the financial capacity. The financial capacity means the calculation of the required fund and evidence of availablity of that fund for your expenses while studying in Australia.

🔔 ALERT 🔔: Australian Government has again increased student visa fees including other visa sub-classes as well, and the hiked price is effective from 01 July, 2026.

The new visa fees for student applicant is now AU$.2,500 which is straight forward 25% increase in previous visa fees AU$ 2,000.

Australian government had sharply hiked the visa fees from AU$. 710 to AUD. 1,600 in July 2024 and AUD 1,600 to AUD.2,000 in July 2025.

AU$. 2,000 was already a massive fees in comparison to visa fees of different countries like USA (US$. 185), Canada (CA$. 150), New Zealand ( NZ$. 850), UK (UK£.558).

अष्ट्रेलियाले विद्यार्थी भिसाको आवेदन शुल्क लगातार तेस्रो वर्ष पनि बढाएको छ।

यसअघि सन् २०२४ को जुलाईमा ७१० अष्ट्रेलियन डलर रहेको विद्यार्थी भिसा शुल्क एकैपटक बढाएर १,६०० अष्ट्रेलियन डलर पुर्‍याइएको थियो। त्यसपछि सन् २०२५ को जुलाईमा फेरि वृद्धि गर्दै १,६०० अष्ट्रेलियन डलरबाट २,००० अष्ट्रेलियन डलर कायम गरिएको थियो।

अब सन् २०२६ को जुलाई १ देखि लागू हुने गरी विद्यार्थी भिसाको आवेदन शुल्क फेरि बढाएर २,५०० अष्ट्रेलियन डलर बनाइएको छ।

यससँगै पछिल्ला तीन वर्षमा अष्ट्रेलियाले विद्यार्थी भिसा शुल्कमा निरन्तर वृद्धि गर्दै आएको छ।
