Law Minister Sobita Gautam said the government spends around Rs 351 Crore annually to support prisoners aged 18–59. According to a government study, there are 26,029 prisoners in this age group, with an estimated annual cost of Rs 135,000 per prisoner.

She said the government is preparing legal provisions to involve prisoners in productive work and help them reform and contribute to society.
