Aanstaande vrijdag 6 mei hebben wij de eer om professor Jakub Urbanik, hoogleraar Romeins recht aan de universiteit van Warschau in ons midden te verwelkomen!
Daarbij kunnen wij u inmiddels een update geven over het onderwerp van zijn lectio: een inleiding in een Romeins-Egyptische familievete aan de hand van de bestudering van P. Oxy. 237!
‘Het verzoekschrift van Dyonisia’, (P,. Oxy 237), staat als sinds zijn publicatie ruim 120 jaar geleden nadrukkelijk in de wetenschappelijke belangstelling. Niet alleen omdat deze clash tussen dochter en vader uit een aristocratische familie dankbaar materiaal is voor sociale historici, maar zeker ook doordat het een interessante inkijk biedt in de (Romeins)-Egyptische juridische cultuur in de tweede eeuw na Christus.
De papyri (bestaande uit negen kolommen) stellen ons in staat een dieper inzicht verkrijgen in de destijds geldende normen en wetten, en zij verschaffen ons cruciale informatie over het functioneren van het eigendomsregister, over het huwelijksvermogensrecht, over de (grenzen van de) vaderlijke macht, over de Romeinse rechtspraktijk, de activiteit van de plaatselijke juridische experts, en vooral over een van de belangrijkste vraagstukken waar de juridische papyrologie voor staat: onderzoek aan de verschillende rechtstradities die in het Romeinse Egypte naast elkaar bestonden (het rechtspluralisme). Hoe interacteerden zij onderling? En hoe ging de Romeinse rechter daarmee om?
Professor Urbanik zal in zijn lectio enkele resultaten presenteren uit een onderzoeksproject dat als doel heeft een uitgebreide nieuwe editie en commentaar van P. Oxy. 237 te ontwikkelen. Zo kijken wij naar vier fragmentarische kolommen, waarvan de interpretatie in de oorspronkelijke editie van Grenfell en Hunt niet eerder gepubliceerd zijn! Daarnaast zijn talloze en grondige correcties in de tekst gedaan, die een hernieuwde kijk op het document als geheel, als ook nieuwe inzichten in de context, aard en de verschillende invalshoeken geven.
Tijdens de lectio neemt professor Urbanik u mee door een reconstructie van de rechtszaak op basis van de nieuwe bevindingen, waarbij ook aandacht zal zijn voor de door door Dionysia gekozen processtrategie. Ook zal een nieuwe hypothese over de oorspronkelijke functie van P. Oxy. II 237 worden opgeworpen!
Wij verwelkomen u graag bij deze unieke mogelijkheid om de originele bronnen tot u te nemen. Het zal u niet verbazen dat de lectio ditmaal in het Engels gegeven zal worden.
Voor het overige is het programma zoals u van ons gewend bent: vanaf 17:00 uur bent u uitgenodigd voor een borrel op het secretariaat van de afdeling Rechtsgeschiedenis (Kamerlingh Onnes Gebouw, A-vleugel, 3e verdieping). Om 18:15 uur begint vervolgens de lezing in lokaal B.013, waarna wij na afloop voor hen die dat willen zullen dineren in Philipsstijl.

This Friday, May 6th, we have the honor to welcome Jakub Urbanik, professor of Roman Law and the Law of Antiquity at the University of Warsaw!
We are now able to give you a further update on the content of the lecture: an introduction into a Roman-Egypt family feud by studying P. Oxy 237.
Since its publication more than 120 years ago, P. Oxy 237, usually dubbed as the ‘Petition of Dionysia’ has attracted considerable scholarly attention: not just because the court confrontation of an elite daughter with her own father provides prime fodder for social history, but due to the numerous insights it offers into legal life in 2nd century Egypt.
Its nine columns preserve for us rich normative and jurisdictional material, and provide crucial information on the functioning of the property record office, on the law of marriage, on the paternal power and its limits, on the Roman jurisdictional practice, the activity of the local legal experts, and, above all, on one of the main questions confronted by juristic papyrology: the coexistence in Roman Egypt of different legal traditions (‘legal pluralism’), the interactions between them and the approach thereto of the Roman courts.
Professor Urbanik will present some of the results of a research project aiming at a comprehensive new edition and commentary of P. Oxy. 237. The reading of the fragmentary four columns left unpublished by Grenfell and Hunt and numerous corrections to the rest of the text have allowed a renewed look into the entirety of the document and new insights into its narrative, content, and nature.
Also, an outline of the newly reconstructed legal proceedings will be presented, and the processual strategy adopted by Dionysia, as well hazard a new hypothesis on the original function of P. Oxy. II 237.
