With a number of countries, The Netherlands has bilateral Memoranda of Understanding containing a clause on Working Holiday Programmes (“WHP”). Under a WHP, people under 31 years of age can spend a year in the Netherlands to experience the culture and society. ‘Incidental’ work activity is allowed, to finance the cost of staying in the Netherlands. Though, what ‘incidental’ work activity actually entailed was not previously defined in detail.

As per October 1, 2018, ‘incidental’ work activity is defined as working for one employer for a maximum of 12 consecutive weeks. The number of hours within these weeks is not constrained. After these 12 weeks, the employee can continue to work for another employer for another 12 weeks and so on.

The measure aims to prevent employers from getting employees to the Netherlands for the sole purpose of employment and thus circumventing the standard combined work-residence permit application process or highly skilled migrant procedure.

Special for expats and their families

Amstelveen is often overlooked as Amsterdam’s more suburban neighbour; yet in addition to its easy access to the buzz of Amsterdam and the getaways at Schiphol airport, there’s much to be said about the expat community of this liveable city, including international schools and social clubs.

Living an expat life can be exciting, but also challenging. Divorce rates, for instance, are higher than average among expats, and international family law can sometimes be a legal jungle.

‼️Intra-Corporate Transferees allowed working as independent contractors‼️

👉🏽 As from October 1, 2018, non-EU citizens working in the Netherlands as Intra-Corporate Transferees (ICT), will be allowed to work as an independent contractor(self-employed) or freelancer next to their ICT job. This expanded the possibility for ‘hybrid’ entrepreneurship was already available for highly skilled migrants and non-EU students. The main purpose is strengthening of the position of the Netherlands as an internationally competitive economy and to attract international talent. Importantly though, the conditions of the ICT-permit must be met continuously throughout any independent work activity.

Next week: No direct trains between Utrecht - Rotterdam, The Hague - Leiden

There will be no direct trains from Saturday, October 20, until Monday, October 29, no direct trains between Rotterdam and Utrecht and The Hague and Leiden. Those planning on travelling on these routes should prepare themselves for delays that could last up to 45 minutes.

8 days without direct trains😱
The Netherlands will be without direct trains between Rotterdam and Utrecht Central Station and The Hague and Leiden for eight days due to work being done on the railway tracks. ProRail is namely working on doubling the number of railway tracks between Utrecht Central Station and Utrecht Leidse Rijn from two to four.

From mid-December onwards, Sprinters and Intercity trains should be able to use the new tracks. Doubling the number of tracks is a large project and ProRail hopes that it will result in a reduction of delays and a shorter travel time for passengers.

How will you be affected?
To limit nuisance for travellers as much as possible, ProRail has decided specifically upon this period to work on the train tracks, as these dates fall under the autumn holiday. Should you need to travel on the routes Rotterdam Central Station to Utrecht Central Station, The Hague Central Station to Utrecht Central Station or Leiden Central Station to Utrecht Central Station, you can make a detour via Schiphol Airport.

Trains will be travelling according to a revised schedule between Rotterdam Central Station, The Hague Central Station and Woerden. Rail replacement buses will travel between Woerden and Utrecht Central Station.
