The Bayelsa State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) is participating in the Women in Security Summit & Awards (WINSEC) 2026, currently holding in Abuja. The summit, themed "Strategic Role of Women in Strengthening National Security Through Leadership, Innovation and Collaborative Partnership," is an initiative of NAWOJ aimed at promoting gender inclusion, fostering women's leadership in national security and honouring outstanding peacebuilding champions.

Representing Bayelsa State at the event are the State Chairperson, Comrade Grace Orumieyefa, the State Secretary, Eyal Ikisikpo and the National Ex-Officio, Timi Idoko, reaffirming the chapter's commitment to advancing women's role in peace, security and national development.

NAWOJ Bayelsa Seeks Stronger Partnership with Ministry of Women Affairs

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bayelsa State Chapter, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the rights and welfare of women and children through strategic partnerships with relevant government institutions.

NAWOJ Chairperson, Mrs. Grace Orumieyefa, reiterated this during a courtesy visit which she led the State Executive Council and some members of the association to the Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, Mrs. Joanah Gigi.

Mrs. Orumieyefa said NAWOJ remained dedicated to using the media as a tool for promoting gender equality, protecting the rights of women and children, and supporting initiatives that foster inclusive development in Bayelsa State.

She called for closer collaboration between the association and the ministry in driving advocacy and public awareness on issues affecting women, children, and vulnerable persons.

In her remarks, Mrs. Joanah Gigi commended NAWOJ for its consistent advocacy and professionalism in reporting issues of public interest.

She assured the association of the ministry's willingness to partner with NAWOJ in implementing programmes and campaigns aimed at empowering women, safeguarding children, and promoting social development across the state.

Both parties expressed optimism that the partnership would further strengthen efforts to improve the lives of women, children, and vulnerable groups in Bayelsa State.

NAWOJ Bayelsa Seeks Partnership with New Waves Management

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, (NAWOJ), Bayelsa State Chapter, has sought collaboration with the Bayelsa State Newspaper Corporation, publishers of New Waves, as the Executive begins its second term in office.

The Chairperson of NAWOJ in the state, Mrs. Grace Orumieyefa, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the management of the corporation in Yenagoa.

Mrs. Orumieyefa said the visit was aimed at strengthening the partnership between NAWOJ and the state-owned newspaper in promoting information dissemination and development in Bayelsa State.

She noted that the association remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of women, children, and other vulnerable groups through sustained public enlightenment and sensitisation.

The NAWOJ chairperson, added that collaboration with media organisations is essential to achieving the association's objectives.

Responding, the Overseer of the Bayelsa State Newspaper Corporation, Mrs. Ruth Gwegwe, congratulated the NAWOJ executive on its successful inauguration and second term in office.

Mrs. Gwegwe, attributed the achievement to the executive impressive performance during its first tenure.

She commended NAWOJ's advocacy for women and children and called for sustained efforts to address the challenges facing vulnerable groups and assured NAWOJ of the corporation's support and readiness to partner with them.

The visit ended with both organisations reaffirming their commitment to working together in promoting the welfare of women and children in Bayelsa State.

NAWOJ BAYELSA CELEBRATES WORLD DRUG ABUSE DAY

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bayelsa State Chapter, has called on all citizens, especially young people, to abstain from drug abuse and embrace healthy, productive lifestyles as the world marks the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Mrs. Grace Orumieyefa, and Secretary, Mrs. Eyal Ikisikpo-Banabo, the Association joined the global community in observing this year's event with the theme: "World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses."

According to the statement, drug abuse continues to pose a serious threat to public health, safety, and national development. While longstanding challenges such as addiction, drug trafficking, and substance dependence remain, new threats, including the spread of synthetic drugs and online drug markets, require fresh thinking and coordinated action.

NAWOJ Bayelsa noted that governments at all levels, civil society organizations, healthcare providers, educators, parents, and community leaders have critical roles to play in protecting vulnerable populations and ensuring access to evidence-based prevention and treatment services.

The Association called on all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in addressing the root causes of drug abuse, reducing stigma against people seeking treatment, and empowering individuals to make informed and healthy choices.
It stressed that on this World Drug Day, people should renew their commitment to building safer, healthier, and drug-free communities.

The Association further urged all stakeholders to address persisting issues, respond effectively to new challenges, and create innovative solutions that protect lives and secure a brighter future for all.
