Barrister, I adopted a child in 1999 and he has been living with me ever since. One man is claiming to be the father and he wants to assume custody of the child. Does he have the right to claim the child? That man needs to understand that adoption is when someone legally assumes the role of a parent for a child, permanently transferring all rights and responsibilities from the child's biological parents. If the adoption was done legally then no Jupiter can take that child from you.

What You Need to Know About Electricity Disconnection in Nigeria.
If your electricity gets disconnected, it’s important to know your rights and what the law says. According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Rules 2007, there are clear steps a distribution company (DisCo) must follow after cutting off your power.

What happens after disconnection?

Once a DisCo disconnects your electricity, they are required to leave a written notice at your premises, which includes:

The date and time of disconnection.
The reason for the disconnection.
Steps you can take to reconnect the electricity.
The DisCo’s contact details.
Do they need to give notice before disconnecting?

Contrary to popular belief, the DisCo is not required to give you notice before they disconnect your electricity. The notice only needs to be provided after the disconnection, explaining why it happened and how to get your power restored.

This rule ensures that you’re informed post-disconnection but doesn't require advance warning. If your electricity is cut off, look for the written notice to understand the reason and the steps to reconnect.

Staying aware of these rules helps you understand your rights as an electricity consumer in Nigeria.

One of the ways of planning an estate is to give gifts of property to your loved ones in your lifetime. This is an easy and convenient way of disposing of your estate as it ensures that your assets are inherited by the persons you desire to inherit them. There is however a caveat you need to be aware of. Don’t gift out landed properties to loved ones secretly. When you give a gift of land or a building, ensure that you do it in the presence of witnesses and you back it up with the proper documentation. This way, you can be sure that the gift would go to the person intended. Anything short of this may cause the beneficiary to lose the gift.

The Price of Staying Silent: A Legal Lesson

There was a man named Mr. Uche who went into business with Mr. Okoro. Things were fine until it was time for payments. Over the years, Mr. Okoro sent several letters—reminders on May 21, 2014, June 17, 2014, April 8, 2015, and even more in 2016 and 2017—asking Mr. Uche to pay up the settlement they agreed on, including 15% yearly interest.

But Mr. Uche never replied. He didn’t argue, didn’t agree—just silence.

Eventually, the issue ended up in court, and Mr. Uche tried to fight the interest charge. But the court wasn’t having it. The Court pointed out that when you stay silent and don’t respond where a reply is needed, it can be taken as agreeing to the terms.

In the end, Mr. Uche had to pay everything—the settlement and the interest that had piled up—simply because he chose to ignore the letters.

In business and legal matters, silence isn’t golden. Always respond when you’re supposed to, or it could cost you later.

The Yoruba proverb "Ile ni a nwo ki a to somo loruko" (We look at the home before naming a child) speaks to the idea of considering your situation before making important decisions. When it comes to estate planning, this proverb reminds us that you need to first understand your family, your assets, and your obligations before deciding how to distribute your estate.

Just as no one names a child without looking at the family background, estate planning also requires you to carefully evaluate everything—your properties, your dependents, and what your family will need in the future. This way, your will or estate plan will reflect your true situation and secure your family's future. In short, you have to take a good look at your current life and responsibilities before making decisions about how your wealth will be shared, just like how we consider the home before naming a child.
