It is in the interest of Justice, that there should be an institution saddled with the responsibility of maintaining equilibrium and peaceful coexistence between persons, organisations, parastatals etc, as Justice is a three way traffic; Justice to the Accused, to the Aggrieved and to the Society.

Apropos to the above, the Law Students Association of Nigeria, University of Uyo, on the 1st of December, 2023 held her Call to Bar/Opening of Legal Year with the theme, The Law As A Symbol of Justice For The Society

The import of this being that the persons so called to the LAWSAN Bar, now have the right to appear and defend their clients in the LAWSAN High Court, Elections Petition Tribunals and up to the Apex Court; the LAWSAN Court of Appeal.

Also, with the Opening of the Legal Year, cases can now be filed and entertained in the courts.

It's also however pertinent to note that these cases are not fictitious cases but real life cases surrounding student activities in the faculty and beyond, with penalties which are as grave as that affecting the status of your studentship as Court Judgements are enforced by the School/Faculty Management.

The ceremony also saw the inauguration of Judges and Justices, of which I was privileged to be inaugurated for a second term, as a Justice of LAWSAN's apex court (The LAWSAN Court of Appeal).

I must of neccessity, congratulate the Head of the Judiciary; the President of the LAWSAN Court of Appeal, Hon Justice Regina Jackson as well as the Chairman of the LAWSAN Bar, Elijah Umoh SAL, for spearheading such locus classicus ceremony.

God bless the LAWSAN Bar
God bless the LAWSAN Judiciary
God bless Faculty of Law

Hon. Justice Kunam Isemin
Justice, LAWSAN Court of Appeal

It will help you achieve this journey in an easy way. First question that you should ask from yourself is Are you ready to become a law student ? Second thing is you should check for a number of skills inside you. Although it is not possible to have all these skills in a single individual but it is likely to have as much possible. Here is a list of skills we think are most important to being a successful law student.

1. Knowledge Seeker

First and the most important thing is you should have knowledge thirst inside you. A successful student is always a knowledge hungry. The more you will learn about your profession the more powerful you become. Usually Law is portrayed as a dry subject, but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. Law is in fact a very varied subject affecting every aspect of our lives. If you find this interesting thing it is the first positive sigh for you to become a good law student.

2. Self Belief

The second important factor is you should be confident enough in your arguments. The confidence comes with the knowledge. More you will learn about the Law the better your self belief will becomes. It is natural that when you speaks, your knowledge reflects in your words, if you are not confident about the words that you spoke your can’t convince the opponent.

3. Researcher

Studying law requires dedication and hard work. Research and questioning will provide you with help and guidance you must be able to motivate yourself to study. A good law student must always take the initiative in research when required and learn to plan your time. Legal research is therefore key. Resources are increasingly electronic so good computer skills are a real bonus.

Lawyers in Court arguing over how equity applies to their case
Lawyer 1: My Lord, he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. The Defendant in this case has dined his hands dirty and he now brings those soiled hands to this hallowed temple of immaculate Justice......
Lawyer 2: My Lord, my learned friend has only caused a stir in a tea cup before this Court Sir. Sir, Equity does not demand that its suitors have led blameless lives.
Even suitors with hands stained with Banga soup can come to Equity....
Equity when lawyer 1 was talking vs Equity right now - 😅😅😅Only lawyers may relate😅
