DAY 10:- 16 Days of Activism 4th December , 2022
Theme: UNITE Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls

Be Resolute to end Violence against Women and Girls

As the days goes by, FIDA RIVERS charges all women to remain Resolute in their campaign to end violence against women and girls.

To be Resolute means to be determined, purposeful, firm and bold at all times. Do not give up, compromise or take NO for an answer. The right to live free from all forms of violence is a constitutional Right, inherent and therefore inalienable.

To succeed, every woman must discover the inner power or strength, engage all sectors and UNITE our hearts and mind to change the narrative in the family, society and the world.

Many women have failed to achieve their dreams because of family and societal beliefs or pressure. Refuse all forms of relegation, break the culture of silence and stand up for yourself and your children.

Be that woman who dared to make a difference in the society and be ready to take up greater positions of power even in the face of several inhibitions or challenges.

Your goals are achievable. Support one another. Seek the right knowledge and be ready to use it. There are plethora of judicial precedence and Laws in the protection of your Rights.

Arise!! do not sit on the fence, violence against women and girls must end.

On girl child security, let's talk about boundaries and consent. This also applies to the boy child.

You need to teach your children about safe and unsafe touch from people they know as well as strangers. Make sure they are aware that they have the right to say no to anything that makes them feel uncomfortable or strange.

Also, reassure them that they can come to you if any situation arises where they felt uncomfortable and you will be on their side no matter who the person they had been interacting with.

Practice consent by requesting adults in your company to not force your child, no matter how little they are, to hug or kiss them if they do not want to. Likewise, tell your child not to feel pressured to go along with physical contact just because an adult insists on it.

You also need to teach them that they can't touch anyone anyhow. When someone says no they mean no.

Let's try and raise children that know boundaries and respect boundaries.

One week after governor wike signed the inheritance rights bill, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, is advising Rivers people who are not in support of the new law to challenge it in court.

The chairperson of FIDA in Rivers state, Adata Bio-Briggs during a walk for equity to mark the organization's 35th anniversary on Wednesday in Port Harcourt said the group will start sensitizing people in the state on the implications of failing to implement the law

Some women groups, including NAWOJ, the Nigeria Medical Association NMA and many other NGOs who also participated in the walk commended FIDA for its unrelenting support of the issues concerning women and children in the past 35 years

Our correspondent Monica Ogwa reports that the FIDA anniversary celebration walk for equity ended at Abali Park with a free legal clinic and a free medical outreach for drivers and other road users.

Do you know that sexually abused children who keep the abuse a secret or who tell and are not believed are at greater risk of psychological, emotional, social, and physical problems, often lasting into adulthood.

Children may tell portions of what happened or pretend it happened to someone else to gauge adult reaction.

Children will often shut down and refuse to tell more if you respond emotionally or negatively.

Please believe a child who confides in you about an abuse. That's the first step to helping a victim.

I was live on Nigeria Info 92.3 PH
I spoke on the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Rivers State (ACJL) as it concerns women acting as surety on bail matters.

The law provides that a Defendant standing trial in a criminal case cannot be denied bail on the ground that the person seeking to take him on bail is a Woman. The same thing applies to bail at a police station pending completion of investigation.

Once a woman satisfies the conditions provided for a surety, she cannot be denied on account of her gender.

The 1999 constitution (as amended) and the Nigeria Police Act 2020 clearly frown at any form of gender discrimination.
