What is CAC? Who is CAC?

So today I'm going to answer this question.

CAC is an abbreviation for the Corporate Affairs Commission.
This is a Corporate body that is saddled with the task of registering businesses, companies, NGOs and Churches in Nigeria by the federal government.

This body has proven to be effective In their work, because registering your business with CAC has a lot of benefits which include;

1. It secures your business name.
2. It helps you have access to loans and grants as a business owner.
3. It grants you the power of a limited liability as a company owner.
4. It gives you access to a corporate account.
5. It improves your reputation with foreign clients and investors.

WHAT IS THE STATUS OF MY BUSINESS NAME/COMPANY NAME/NGO AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

STATUS----------------- ACTIVE

1. This means that your registered business name is in compliance with the provisions section 417 of CAMA 2020 (as amended)
2. It means that you are still doing business with the registered name known to CAC.
3. It means that your registered name does not risk being struck off the register of business/companies’ names.
4. It means that you have been filing your annual returns as at when due and not in default.
5. It means you are in good business standing with CAC and can solicit financial grants.
6. It means you recently registered a new business venture.

STATUS-------------------- INACTIVE

1. This means that you are in default of filing your annual returns with CAC which is a legal requirement by the provisions of section 417 of CAMA 2020 (as amended).
2. It means that you are no longer using the registered name to do business.
3. It means that your registered name will be liable to be struck off the business/companies’ register by CAC as provided by section 425(3) of CAMA 2020 (as amended).
4. It means that CAC will notify the general public that your registered business/company/NGO has been stuck off and is not open for business legally.
5. After striking off, your business/company/NGO certificate of incorporation becomes null and void.

NOTE – People actually register businesses with the intention to defraud the general public. And so, one way CAC guarantees credibility and guards against fraudulent business practitioners is to ensure the timeous filing of annual returns of the business venture with CAC.
