In today’s digital age, content creation is a potent tool for social engineering and many content creators shape how the world sees their societies. Unfortunately, some rely on misleading or harmful narratives driven by attention, monetization, and influence.
Correcting this trend requires more than censorship to achieve this goal. It demands education, accountability, public policy and authentic storytelling.
It is very sad to realize that people still do not explore content creation to represent our society in a positive way, particularly to the wider audience which goes beyond our locality. The rising trend of uncles killing their cousins, "smart" robbery and all the rest of them leave soo much to be desired. These narratives have lingered so long during the early years of Nollwood. And must not continue.
While lending my voice to that of our big Auntie Amarachi Attamah page on this issue, here are some of the strategies we can adopt;
•There is need to empower audiences to think critically about what they consume. Schools, communities, and platforms can teach people how to spot clickbait, identify deepfakes, and verify sources. Informed viewers are the first defense against misinformation.
•Let’s amplify creators who tell real, grounded stories about their communities. Grants, visibility programs, and partnerships with cultural institutions can help ethical storytellers thrive.
•We should encourage communities to counter false narratives through crowdsourced fact-checking, grassroots storytelling, and local digital campaigns that reflect lived realities.
•There is need to engage and educate creators rather than punish. We should train creators on responsible storytelling and the long-term impact of their narratives on the society. As such, the alleged Chinese idea of content creators being certified experts in their areas may be adopted. More so, rewarding ethical content with visibility or funding can shift incentives.
•There should be smart Regulation without Censorship, especially on harmful misinformation. This regulation should reflect both national and foreign policies of the government.
