OVERVIEW:
Law practice is a business and a profession. To start your own law firm successfully, you must agree to see it as both. While many of the skills you need to practice law will help you in your business, running your business will require you to tackle different problems than practicing law. And these challenges don’t go away as your business matures and grows. They just change and challenge you in new ways. In this webinar, we delve into running a law firm as a successful and profit making business.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- How to start a law firm

- The financial responsibility of starting a law firm

- How to run and manage a successful law firm

- The legal implication in Nigeria for running a law firm

As a proud alumnae of the renowned Lagos Law school, I can’t but reminisce with surprising vivid recall, the long drawn out hours at lectures, tutorials and indeed sleepless nights preparing for exams, which culminated in a successful transition to our noble profession. Now, after almost 30 years in active legal practice, building what I dare say, has been a very successful career, I can’t help but wonder whether my climb up the career ladder would not have been a little easier, had I been better equipped and made aware of some key truths about practicing law in the 21st century. With the benefit of hindsight, I humbly submit that legal knowledge as we know it has in recent years become merely a skill to be leveraged on, alongside new competencies, which were not taught in law school. Indeed, the law school curriculum basically continues to focus on doctrinal law and this in and of its self is no longer sufficient to build a successful legal career.

This course is essential for lawyers, both young and old, who are struggling with the realisation that in order to be successful, new skills, mindsets and retraining will have been be undertaken, with client service deliver at the heart of it all. At this webinar, you will learn the key difference between the practice of law and engaging in the delivery of legal services. The reason this distinction matters, as well as a clear understanding of the key new skills and competencies you will have to adopt and which are fundamental to your success as a lawyer.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE is the capacity to experience, understand, and effectively apply the power and acumen of emotions as a source of human energy, knowledge, connection, and influence. We have to deal with this in many ways as attorneys. We deal with this in the sense of our relationship with clients, other lawyers, judges, witnesses and employees....................................................................
Benefits Of E.I In Law Firms.
1. Studies show that the emotionally intelligent out-perform their less emotionally intelligent peers in production and sales, and then, logically, they often get the most promotions and bonuses.

2. It is also said that emotionally intelligent lawyers interact better, preventing disciplinary and malpractice proceedings.

3. Emotional Intelligence at the law firm.
Only a law firm whose representatives have emotional intelligence will work to the full of effectiveness..................................................................
How To Build E.I In Law Firms

Accept that you may not be good at EI: there is a test called 'Reading the Mind in the Eye' where you are given 36 sets of eyes and you have to choose from a set of choices that best represent those eyes' feelings, take the exam to know how good you are at reading people's emotions.

Observe how you respond to others, make a deliberate effort to put yourself in their position, and commit to being more open and respecting the experiences and needs of others.

Examine how you react to stressful circumstances and work to remain calm, collected and under control.

I remember when I was approached by in 2017 to deliver a paper on Mediation, I was scared to my wits and I told him I could not cos I was not confident enough to teach and I remember him encouraging me to  go right ahead. In doing so, he unlocked a part of me I never existed , the art of public speaking.
After gracing so many Trainings, seminars and fora, I have decided to take my Communication and leadership skills a step further by joining the Toastmasters International which through its worldwide network of clubs every week helps more than a quarter million men and women of every ethnicity, education level and Profession build their competence in communication.
