As we kick-off National Privacy Week 2026, we are reminded of the vital role privacy plays in building a secure, ethical, and innovation-driven digital future. As emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, biometrics, big data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) continue to transform society, the conversation around privacy must remain central.
This year’s theme, “Privacy in the Era of Emerging Technologies: Trust, Ethics, and Innovation,” calls on organisations, regulators, and individuals to create a careful balance between technological advancement and the fundamental right to privacy.
Emerging technologies rely on personal data to function effectively. However, innovation pursued without adequate safeguards can undermine public confidence, expose individuals to risk, and result in significant reputational and regulatory consequences. Trust is built through transparency in data collection, accountability in processing, and integrity in deploying new technologies. In this sense, trust is truly the currency of the digital age.
Ethics must be embedded at the design stage of technological advancement. Principles such as Privacy by Design, data minimisation, purpose limitation, fairness, and explainability are foundational requirements under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023. As technology influences significant decisions, organisations must ensure that such systems are free from bias, transparent in their operation, and fully aligned with applicable data protection laws and recognised global best practices.
As we commemorate National Privacy Week 2026, we encourage organisations to:
· Reassess their digital governance frameworks.
· Conduct Data Privacy Impact Assessments (DPIA) for emerging technology projects.
· Audit data processing activities of the preceding year.
· Strengthen internal awareness through staff training on data protection obligations.
Privacy should not be viewed merely as a compliance obligation, but as a reflection of organisational values.
At SPA Ajibade & Co, we remain committed to supporting responsible digital advancement by advising on robust data protection frameworks that promote trust, uphold ethics, and drive innovation.
We encourage all stakeholders to seize this week as an opportunity to renew our shared commitment to safeguarding personal data and ensuring that technological advancement promotes and preserves human dignity.
