Our Seun Fapohunda of the firm’s Energy and Natural Resources Practice Group is attending Phase 4 of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission () Stakeholder Consultation Forum being held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

In this segment of the Forum, the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), through the NUPRC is considering four regulations that would aid the implementation of some fragments of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, especially in the areas of contracts, commercials, revocation of oil and gas licenses.

The four regulations include:
- Draft Petroleum Assignment of Interest Regulations
- Draft Upstream Revocation of Licenses and Lease Regulations
- Draft Upstream Commercial Operating Regulations
- Draft Upstream Petroleum Development Contract Administration Regulations

The NUPRC has stated that it will continue to embark on programmes and policies that will create an enabling environment for growth and more investments in the Nigerian upstream oil and and gas sector.

In the global pursuit of a sustainable future, the international community has adopted a multifaceted approach, and Energy Transition occupies a pivotal position in addressing the stark realities of climate change. Without strategic economic restructuring, Nigeria, heavily reliant on revenue generated from fossil fuel, faces a potential economic crisis arising from the anticipated decline in global oil prices.

Furthermore, the severe social and environmental repercussions endured by local communities due to decades of poorly managed oil exploration and processing operations are profoundly disconcerting and cannot be disregarded. With 63% of its population categorized as multidimensionally poor and around 40% lacking access to electricity, the importance of incorporating ESG considerations into Nigeria's transition to cleaner energy while simultaneously ensuring energy security cannot be overstated.

Our series on Energy Transition in Nigeria and ESG is structured into 4 distinct parts. This series spans across topics such as Nigeria's international commitment to Energy Transition, the role of gas as Nigeria’s transitional fuel, the development of Renewable Energy in Nigeria, and Nigeria's prospects for achieving Net-Zero by 2060.
