Investors are not the only ones rejecting businesses anymore.

A quieter shift is happening.

Algorithms are slowly entering the funding conversation.

Long before your pitch deck gets reviewed, decision systems can already detect warning signs:

– Structural weaknesses
– Financial inconsistencies
– Governance gaps
– Risk patterns

AI does not respond to passion.
It responds to signals.

It reads how your business behaves, how decisions are made, how controls are structured, and how predictable your operations appear.

Which means many businesses are not truly underfunded.

They are data-rejected.Because to any intelligent system — human or machine — disorder looks like risk.

And risk rarely attracts capital.

For Nigerian businesses especially, this creates a serious advantage for those who understand what is changing.

Funding will increasingly favour businesses that show:

✔ Clear internal structure
✔ Defined authority and roles
✔ Financial discipline and controls
✔ Policy-driven operations
✔ Compliance consciousness
✔ Risk management mechanisms

Structure is no longer administrative.
It is strategic infrastructure.

Smart founders are no longer asking,
“How do I attract investors?”
They are asking,
“What story does my business data tell?”

I am Akaa Esther of Esteeng Legal .
I work with businesses to build governance systems, internal controls, and operational structures that make companies easier to trust, easier to scale, and far more funding-ready.

Because in the modern capital environment, order is no longer optional.
It is a competitive advantage.

Imagine this: A new staff member was offered a promotion because she was the perfect fit. But she turned it down, thinking she didn’t deserve it and fearing conflict with older colleagues.

This might seem humble, but it can secretly hold back your business. Here’s how:

🔹 Lost innovation: Doubt silences fresh ideas.

🔹 Missed opportunities: Talented people miss their chance to lead.

🔹 Stuck growth: Your business slows down when the best people step back.

Your internal dialogue can shape your success. Challenge limiting beliefs like “I’m not ready” or “I’ll upset others.” Instead, reframe with: “I’m trusted for this role. My fresh perspective matters.”

Legal Safeguards to Keep Culture Healthy:

✨ Clear policies that reward merit, not just seniority

✨ Anti-retaliation practices to protect new leaders

✨ Inclusive workplaces where fresh perspectives thrive

👉 Remember that growth comes from the courage to step up and the policies to protect you when you do.

Have you ever turned down a big opportunity because of doubt? Let’s talk about it below!

3 Costly Legal Mistakes I’ve Helped Businesses Avoid (So You Don’t Have To)

Let’s be honest:

Most business owners don’t intentionally break the law or ignore legal requirements.

They’re just trying to run a business.

Serve customers. Make sales. Grow.

But in the process, I’ve seen too many smart entrepreneurs fall into avoidable legal traps—some of which nearly cost them their businesses.

Here are 3 common legal mistakes I’ve helped my clients avoid (and how you can too):

🔸 Running a thriving business… without proper registration.

A client was making good money and growing fast,

But their business wasn’t registered with CAC.

No legal identity.

No protection.

And they couldn’t access certain opportunities like funding, tenders, or partnerships.

Register your business early—and choose the right structure (e.g., LLC vs. BN). It’s your legal foundation.

🔸Trusting verbal promises instead of contracts

One client partnered with someone based on a “gentleman’s agreement.”

When things fell apart, they had no written terms to fall back on.

The result?

Loss of money, wasted time, and unnecessary conflict.

No matter how “simple” a deal looks, put it in writing.

A clear, well-drafted contract saves you heartache and protects both parties.

🔸 Overlooking regulatory compliance (especially in Lagos)

One business owner didn’t realize they needed specific permits from local authorities (like LASEPA).

They were served a notice of closure and almost lost weeks of operations.

Know your industry regulations.

Ask questions.

Work with professionals who understand the local landscape.

The good news?

All of these mistakes are preventable—when you take legal structures seriously from the beginning.

That’s where I come in.

I help business owners build smart, legally protected structures so they can focus on growth—without legal fires popping up every few months.

If you’re unsure about your current setup, or just want to avoid common pitfalls, I’d love to help.

Winning Hearts and Minds: Building a Human-Centered Organization

Effective leadership goes beyond task delegation and performance metrics—it’s about winning the hearts and minds of team members. When people feel valued, respected, and connected to a shared purpose, they don’t just comply—they commit.

To foster this kind of deep engagement, organizations must ensure that their policies and culture are truly human-centered.

Here's how👇

📌 Empathy-Driven Policies: Build policies that reflect an understanding of employees' real-life needs—whether it’s flexible work arrangements, mental health support, or inclusive career development paths.

📌Culture of Belonging: Cultivate an environment where every voice matters. Celebrate diversity, encourage psychological safety, and foster open dialogue across all levels of the organization.

📌 Transparent Communication: Keep communication honest, clear, and consistent. When leadership communicates with authenticity, trust naturally follows.

📌 Leadership by Example: Leaders must model the values they wish to see. Empathy, accountability, and humility should be visible in everyday decisions.

📌 Feedback as a Two-Way Street: Create mechanisms for continuous feedback—not just from the top down, but also bottom up. Listening to employees helps refine policies and strengthen engagement.

Human-centered leadership isn’t a trend—it’s a necessity. By aligning culture and policy with human needs, organizations not only improve performance, they create workplaces where people thrive.

How is your organization aligning leadership and culture to put people first?

Are Women Still Excluded from Inheriting? Let’s Talk.

Recently, I came across a response from a male friend during a conversation about female inheritance rights. He said, “Women already benefit from both ends—through their fathers and their husbands. Besides, most modern homes give their daughters something of value. And in Igbo tradition, it's an unwritten rule that male children take care of their sisters.”

This view, while rooted in cultural sentiment, raises an important question: Should a woman’s right to inherit be based on goodwill or on the law?

The truth is, not every woman gets married. Some are widowed young. Others may face financial insecurity in marriage. Relying on husbands or brothers for economic security doesn’t replace a woman’s right to inherit property from her own family. Support is not the same as ownership.

Even in “modern homes” where parents try to provide for their daughters, there’s no guarantee. Without legal recognition, a daughter’s access to her family estate can be denied at any time. That’s why the Supreme Court’s ruling in Ukeje v. Ukeje (2014) is such a landmark. The Court ruled that any customary practice that excludes female children from inheritance is unconstitutional. Simply put: every Nigerian child, male or female, has equal legal rights to inherit.

While it’s admirable that some male relatives look after their sisters, care should never replace justice. Women don’t need to depend on culture or charity when the Constitution already backs their rights.

Let’s not just talk about women empowerment in theory—let’s support the legal rights that truly secure their future. It’s time to move from sentiment to structure, and from custom to constitutional justice.

Do you think women should be included in inheritance rights?

5 BUSINESSES MISTAKES YOU CAN AVOID WITH SIMPLE  POLICY DOCUMENTATION

(A post every small business owner in Naija needs to read)

Let me not lie to you — running a business in Nigeria is already hard. But what makes it harder for many business owners is lack of structure.

And I’m not talking about fancy offices or wearing suits.

I’m talking about simple, clear policies that tell your staff: “This is how we do things here.”

No matter your industry — fashion, food, salon, tech, logistics — here are 5 mistakes you can avoid just by documenting your policies:

🔸 Doing everything by yourself.

You hire people, yet you’re still the one taking orders, replying customers, fixing issues.

✅Policy fix: A delegation and operations policy will free you from doing everybody’s job

🔸 Repeating the same instructions every day.

How many times will you tell Blessing how to record sales? Or remind Femi about delivery rules?

✅Policy fix: Documented SOPs (standard operating procedures) let your staff work independently — even in your absence.

🔸 Staff taking you for granted.

Because nothing is written, they feel they can do as they like. Come late, disrespect customers, argue with you.

✅Policy fix: A staff conduct policy makes boundaries clear. Nobody will say “I didn’t know.”

🔸 Money entering voice mail.

You check the records and things are not adding up. “Who took the change from the POS?” Crickets.

✅Policy fix: A finance and petty cash policy brings accountability. Every kobo will start to have name and destination.

🔸 Losing customers because of inconsistency.

Today, your service is on point. Tomorrow, one staff will spoil your brand with bad attitude.

✅Policy fix: A customer service policy ensures everyone speaks and acts with the same standard.

Listen — policy documentation is not “too serious.”

It’s common sense written down.

It’s how you go from chaos to calm. From hustle to structure. From survival to real business growth.

Ready to stop the confusion and get your house in order?

DM me “POLICY” and let’s map out what your business truly needs — no overthinking, just practical steps.

Let’s build something that won’t crumble.
