🚨 Nigeria’s New Tax Regime Is Not Just Multiple Taxation — It Is CONTINUOUS TAXATION
Let’s be clear.
What Nigerians are facing is not simply many taxes.
It is repeated taxation on the same income and the same commodity — from birth to burial.
That is continuous taxation.
🔁 ONE INCOME, TAXED ENDLESSLY
A Nigerian earns income once.
Yet that same income is taxed:
• At source (PAYE / Withholding)
• At receipt (VAT on spending)
• At use (levies, charges, tariffs)
• At movement (road taxes, tolls)
• At survival (electricity, fuel, telecoms, sanitation “fees”)
👉 Same money. Different government hands. Same pocket drained.
That is not taxation.
That is economic recycling of pain.
🛒 ONE COMMODITY, TAXED FROM CRADLE TO CONSUMER
Take one bag of rice:
• Taxed at import or production
• Taxed at transportation
• Taxed at wholesale
• Taxed at retail
• Taxed again at point of consumption (VAT)
At no point does government pause to ask:
“Has this already been taxed?”
That is not revenue policy.
That is institutionalized extortion.
⚖️ WHY THIS IS NOT JUST BAD POLICY — BUT AN ECONOMIC CRIME
A system becomes criminal when it:
• Takes without providing value
• Repeats deductions without justification
• Ignores capacity, income, and survival
• Punishes productivity instead of encouraging it
When taxation destroys the tax base, it is no longer governance —
it is economic sabotage.
🕵🏽‍♂️ WHY EFCC SHOULD INVESTIGATE — NOT ENFORCE
The EFCC was created to fight economic and financial crimes, not to help execute them.
So ask the hard questions:
• Who designed a system that taxes poverty repeatedly?
• Who benefits from fragmented, overlapping collections?
• Where is the money going — infrastructure or private pipelines?
• Why is compliance enforced, but accountability absent?
If this were a private scheme, it would be called racketeering.
Why should government be exempt from scrutiny?
📉 TAX WITHOUT WHEREWITHAL IS STATE-SPONSORED DESTRUCTION
Taxation assumes capacity to pay.
Remove capacity, and what remains is confiscation.
A hungry man is not a tax evader.
A struggling trader is not a criminal.
A collapsing middle class is not a revenue strategy.
🗣️ THIS IS A CALL FOR AUDIT, NOT ARRESTS
Before more enforcement: ✔ Audit the tax layers
✔ Harmonize collections
✔ Eliminate duplicate charges
✔ Restore fairness and reason
Because a nation cannot tax its people into prosperity —
only into collapse.
✊🏽 Tax justice is economic justice.
✊🏽 Continuous taxation is continuous oppression.

POETIC WEEKEND

Life Like Pride, Ride, Slide

Life like pride, ride, slide—
Some rose early, like meteors on a midnight tide.
Fresh from school halls, chalk dust still on dreams,
They climbed quick, shining loud, bursting at the seams.

We watched them—
The early kings and queens of becoming,
Their names ringing first in every gathering,
Their steps sharp, their rise astonishing.

But time is a long road with its own stubborn mind—
Seasons shift, destinies unwind.
Those who seemed behind began to rise,
Slow flame, deep breath, steady as sunrise.

Years rolled like wheels on gravel,
And the story changed its angle—
Early stars stayed relevant, yes,
But the slow growers became stronger, blessed.

Brick by brick, sweat by sweat,
Endurance paid the quiet debt.
They rose—not loud, not rushed—
But firm, refined, deeply brushed.

So to the one grinding today,
Feeling the heat, the weight, the fray—
Don’t run to beat another man’s time.
Life is not a borrowed rhyme.

If your path is rough, tough, or coughs dust in your face,
Still walk it with your full grace.
The sun does not compete with dawn—
It simply shines when its hour comes on.

Your tomorrow can still burn brighter than your fear—
Stand tall, hold faith, your season is near.

Life like pride, ride, slide—
Every soul rises in its perfect stride.

🔥 THE MULTIPLICITY OF TAXES IN NIGERIA — A SILENT WAR AGAINST CITIZENS

Tag:

Why are Nigerians paying tax for the same thing multiple times?
Income tax today, “environmental levy” tomorrow, “local government ticket” next week — then road taxes, signboard fees, sanitation levies, parking charges, radio/TV levies, loading/offloading tickets, wheelbarrow tax, petty-trading fee…

This isn’t governance.
This is economic suffocation.

🚨 WHAT NIGERIANS ARE ALREADY PAYING

Tag:

Here are the major taxes ALREADY sitting on the neck of Nigerians:

VAT (Value Added Tax)

Personal Income Tax (PIT)

Corporate Income Tax (CIT)

Withholding Tax (WHT)

Stamp Duties

Capital Gains Tax

Education Tax / NSITF / ITF levies

Customs & Excise Duties

Local Government “levies” on traders, transporters, shops, artisans and SMEs

Multiple permits and “tickets” imposed by MDAs, markets, unions and task force units

Now combine these with informal demands, harassment, and street-side collectors acting under the excuse of “government revenue.”
This is not taxation.
This is illegal revenue terrorism.

⚖️ WHY MANY OF THESE TAXES ARE ILLEGAL OR UNCONSTITUTIONAL

Tag:

Under Nigerian law:

Only laws passed by the National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, or properly enacted LG bye-laws can impose taxes.

No citizen can be taxed multiple times for the same taxable item or transaction.

Any levy without a legal instrument is unlawful, void, and challengeable.

Local governments have LIMITED taxing powers, mostly around shops, markets, bicycles/wheelbarrows, slaughter slabs, tenement rates, and motor parks.

State revenue agents CANNOT criminalize you for refusing an illegal levy.

Yet, Nigerians are forced daily to pay levies that have no legal basis, issued by “task forces” that have no legislative authority, and enforced through intimidation, seizure of goods, assault, and extortion.

🏛️ UNDER PROPOSAL / CREEPING TAXES

Tag:

Across states, several controversial or duplicative taxes are now being proposed or quietly introduced:

“Environmental Impact Ticket” for small shops

“Digital business tax” for online vendors

Increased local government market levies

Duplicate signage/advert permit fees

Road-use and “transport management” levies

Loading/offloading fees for even micro-business owners

Multiple inspection fees from state MDAs

Most of these are not backed by any valid law.

⚔️ HOW A LAWYER CAN DEFEND YOU AGAINST ILLEGAL TAXATION

Tag:

A competent lawyer can:

Demand the statutory basis for every tax/levy

Issue a cease-and-desist letter to an illegal task force

File a Fundamental Rights Enforcement suit where harassment occurred

Seek a court declaration invalidating unlawful taxes

Challenge double or multiple taxation

Represent a group/association in a joint action against government agencies

Petition oversight agencies and public interest bodies

Nigerians must understand:
You are not helpless. Illegal taxation is challengeable — and winnable.

📢 CALL TO ACTION — STOP SUFFERING IN SILENCE

Know your rights — ask for the legal basis of any levy.

Stop paying taxes issued verbally or on roadside tickets.

Engage a lawyer before parting with money to unauthorized agents.

Document every incident of harassment (videos, receipts, uniforms, IDs).

Support public interest litigation — illegal taxation will not end without pressure.

Share this message — let Nigerians know the law protects them, not revenue agents.

How is it that a country already burning is still being squeezed like this?
Everywhere you turn, Nigerians are asked to “tighten their belts,” yet the same leadership refuses to tighten its own. Before setting up another tax committee, can the government answer one simple question:

How much benefit do Nigerians actually get from the natural resources God blessed this country with?

With all the oil, gas, minerals, and strategic assets we have, ordinary citizens are still treated like endless sources of revenue. Where is the security? Where is the infrastructure? Where is the accountability?

Instead of fixing leakages, waste, corruption, and reckless spending, the solution is always to push more burden on the same people who are already struggling to breathe.

And as if that’s not enough, Nigerians are drowning under strange and excessive bank charges:
– ₦50 stamp duty on every small transfer
– SMS alerts you never asked for
– Card maintenance fees
– VAT on practically everything
– Transfer fees, service fees, convenience fees
– POS charges that keep rising
– New deductions popping up without explanation

So before you come again with new taxes dressed up as “reforms,” what exactly have you done with the money already taken from Nigerians?
Where is the value?
Where is the relief?
Where is the progress?

A responsible government does not tax poverty; it grows productivity. Nigeria needs economic oxygen, not more suffocation.

Do better. Nigerians are not slaves.

Poetic Weekend

CLOG THE CLUMSY CALL

In this half-born house where shadows sway,
I wake to walls that hum like distant drummers—
Soft, uncertain, finding rhythm
in the loose breath of morning.

Bare beams rise like patient ancestors,
leaning, listening, waiting
for the language of the home to learn its own heartbeat.
The air smells of dust, lime, and beginning—
a scent that sits on my skin like a quiet blessing.

The wind slips in, bold and barefoot,
tapping the window frame like a bongo
trying to start a song.
And though the roof stutters when the rain speaks,
it still sings—clumsy, yes, but alive.

This floor knows my footsteps now,
knows the weight of my tired evenings,
knows how I laugh too loudly at night
to keep the loneliness from settling in the corners.

And I tell myself:
clog the clumsy call of fear,
let it choke on its own dust.

Because a home doesn’t wait to be finished
before it begins loving you—
it grows with you, brick by heartbeat,
plaster by patience,
sweat by sacred sweat.

So I plant my dreams here,
in the cracks, in the echoes, in the warm silence—
knowing that one day
this place will stand proud and steady,
a full drum, a full voice,
a home built with my own stubborn, dancing hands.

REAL PROPERTY LAWYERS WORK HARDER THAN PEOPLE THINK

Most people only notice the result, not the sacrifice.
Real property lawyers work round the clock—literally—to shield clients from land abuse, wrongful demolition, illegal lockouts, and hostile takeovers.

When there’s an urgent threat, we don’t sleep:

We file overnight motions.

We rush to court to join necessary parties before damage is done.

We apply to set aside illegal actions.

We secure injunctions that stop bulldozers, security agents, and saboteurs in their tracks.

Property issues are not “DIY problems.”
One wrong step can cost you your land, your building, your peace of mind.

Use a lawyer early.
Don’t wait until the crisis escalates.
Legal protection is cheaper—and safer—than legal repair.
