Tenants in Nigeria have the right to live in peace without any disturbance from the landlord or anyone acting on their behalf.

In other words, as a lawful tenant, the law sees you as the lawful owner of the property during the timeframe of the tenancy.

The law empowers you to use the property to the exclusion of everyone, including the landlord.

That means the landlord needs your permission to enter the apartment. If he does otherwise, you can sue your landlord for trespass.

Tenants in Nigeria have a right to be issued a receipt after they have made payment to their landlord or his representative.

The receipt should contain the name of the tenant, the amount to be paid, a description of the property, as well as the duration of the tenancy.

This will serve as evidence in the event that there is a dispute between the parties in the future.

This week we shall focus on the rights the law affords tenants in Nigeria. Every tenant in Nigeria is entitled to the following rights:
1. Right to a written tenancy agreement;
2. Right to insurance of receipt after payment;
3. Right to peaceful enjoyment of property;
4. Right to notice to quit before eviction.
