AFRILAW has commenced the implementation of the Extractive Host Communities and Human Rights Defenders Training Programme in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in partnership with NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION, Nigeria Working Group on the VPs (NWGPs) and Voluntary Principles Initiative ( VPI) with funding support from Zero Tolerance Initiative ( ZTI) and True Costs Initiative ( TCI).

During the Training Programme about 30 human rights defenders particularly environmental human rights defenders selected from extractive host communities, media organizations and civil society organizations will be trained and empowered in the 8 States of Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Ondo and Rivers State in the Niger Delta region.

The aim and main objective of the training workshop is to raise awareness, train and sensitize environmental human rights defenders from extractive host communities, media and civil society organizations in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria; and empower and promote the protection of human rights defenders’ extractive sector of Nigeria using the VPI and UNGPs Guidance Tools on respecting and protection of human rights defenders.

The Training Workshops will be Chaired and declared open by the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) represented by each State Coordinator.

The Training Programme will be implemented from July to October 2026.

📢 Call for Applicants: Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) Sub-Grant under the Corporate Accountability Initiative (CAI)

The CAI invites applications for a sub-grant to carry out a research project culminating in the publication of a comprehensive country-based study on working conditions of private security personnel (PSPs) and related potential human rights abuses affecting value chains in high-risk sectors such as extractives, forestry, agriculture and finance in Nigeria.

📍 Sub-grant amount: 30 000 EUR
📍 Duration: 3 to 6 months
📍 Only one project will be selected under this specific sub-grant.

📍 Eligibility: Applicants must be a civil society organisation, non-governmental organisation or other non-profit entity and:
• Be a registered legal entity in Nigeria, operational for at least 3 years
• Have previously conducted research on security/private security and/or labour rights
• Have a functional accounting system to accurately record all project-related financial transactions
