Dear Colleagues,

Easter is a season that speaks gently yet powerfully to the human spirit. It reminds us that even after the darkest nights, dawn still breaks; that hope can rise where despair once lingered; and that life, in all its fullness, ultimately triumphs. In a world often weighed down by uncertainty and hardship, the message of Easter reassures us that renewal is always possible and that faith can light the path forward.

This sacred season invites us to reflect on sacrifice, courage, and unwavering faith, virtues that lie at the heart of our calling as legal practitioners. As defenders of justice and custodians of the rule of law, we are daily confronted with the realities of human struggle and the urgent need for fairness, compassion, and accountability. This period calls us to recommit ourselves to these ideals, and to continue standing firmly for justice, even when the path is difficult.

As members of the Bar, we are also called to be voices of calm in turbulent times, bridges where there are divisions, and instruments of peace in our communities. The promise of Easter, of new beginnings, encourages us to renew our dedication to professional integrity, selfless service, and the strengthening of our Association as a beacon of hope and leadership.

This season also reminds us to look beyond ourselves and reach out with compassion. Let us extend kindness to the vulnerable, support to the weary, and encouragement to those who may be struggling. Small acts of love and understanding, inspired by the spirit of Easter, can help heal wounds, restore hope, and bring us closer to the just and peaceful society we all desire.

May the joy of the Resurrection fill our hearts with renewed strength, deepen our sense of purpose, and inspire us to continue working together for a better Bar and a better Nigeria.

I wish you and your loved ones a blessed, joyful, and peaceful Easter.

Happy Easter!

NBA SECURES RELEASE OF LAWYER REMANDED IN PORT HARCOURT

Following the directive of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN , to the NBA Human Rights Institute to immediately monitor and follow up on the remand of Mrs. Lovinah Ugbana Benjamin, the Institute took prompt steps to engage relevant judicial and administrative authorities as well as the NBA Porthacourt branch toward securing her release.

Mrs. Lovinah Ugbana Benjamin, who was earlier remanded following proceedings before the High Court of Rivers State, Port Harcourt, was subsequently released on 26 March 2026 after the intervention of the NBA.

In furtherance of this mandate, the Institute activated its response mechanism and worked closely with the Chairman of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch, Mrs. Cordelia Eke, whose collaboration and swift engagement with relevant stakeholders contributed significantly to the resolution of the matter.

The intervention underscores the commitment of the Nigerian Bar Association to safeguarding the dignity of the legal profession and protecting the fundamental rights of legal practitioners. The NBA reiterates that while courts possess powers to punish for contempt, such powers must be exercised sparingly, judiciously, and strictly within the confines of due process.

The NBA Human Rights Institute will continue to monitor developments arising from the incident and take further steps where necessary. The Association also commends the leadership of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch and our colleagues in Porthacourt for the prompt cooperation and support.

The Nigerian Bar Association remains resolute in defending the independence of the Bar and ensuring that no legal practitioner is subjected to intimidation or unlawful detention in the course of performing professional duties.

EID AL-FITR MUBARAK!

The Nigerian Bar Association celebrates our Muslim colleagues and the entire Muslim Ummah on the joyous occasion of Eid-al-Fitr, marking the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.

Eid-el-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is a reminder of the virtues of sacrifice, discipline, compassion, and devotion to Almighty Allah. The period of Ramadan, observed through fasting, prayer, and acts of charity, reinforces values that resonate deeply with the ideals of justice, equity, and service to humanity, principles that equally underpin the legal profession.

As families and communities gather in celebration, sharing meals, offering prayers, and extending kindness to the less privileged, the NBA urges all Nigerians to embrace the enduring lessons of Ramadan by promoting peace, tolerance, and unity in our nation.

At a time when our country continues to navigate complex social and economic challenges, the spirit of Eid calls on us all, regardless of faith or background, to renew our commitment to justice, compassion, and nation-building.

We pray that this sacred celebration brings hope, abundant blessings, and lasting peace to every home.
