Day 15: The Cost of Freedom — Why We Choose “Exit” Over “Endurance”

In Nigeria, we have a PhD in "Managing." We manage the National Grid. We manage fuel scarcity. We manage bad governance. And, tragically, women are taught that to be a "Good Woman" means to "manage" an abusive, dead, or dangerous marriage. Society points to a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary and calls it a "Success." But I ask you: Is a prison a success just because the prisoner never escaped?...

Day 14 of : Digital Evidence Class — “Screenshots Are Not Enough”

Theme: From Phone to Evidence. Goal: To stop women from losing cases because their digital evidence was thrown out on technicalities. "I have the messages! He admitted it on WhatsApp!" "I have the messages! He admitted it on WhatsApp! We have him!" I hear this every week. A woman walks into my consultation room, phone in hand, full of abuse, confessions, and threats....

Day 13 of : Workplace Harassment — When the “Abuser” is Your Boss

Theme: Power in the Boardroom (and the Senate). Goal: To shift the narrative from "HR Issue" to "Legal Crime" and equip women to document professional abuse. Sexual harassment isn’t just about s*x. It is about power. It is about a structural system designed to remind women that their presence in the boardroom, the Senate, or the office is conditional....

Day 12 of : Polygamy Survival Guide — Structural Power & The “Other” Wife

Goal: To teach women in (or entering) polygamous unions that they must replace "trust" with "contracts." Let’s have the conversation that usually only happens in hushed whispers or shouting matches: Polygamy. Whether you chose it, or it was forced upon you when your "monogamous" husband suddenly introduced a new woman, the reality is the same. Marriage isn't just personal—it is political....

Day 11 of #16 Days: Custody Law vs. “Our Tradition” — The Child’s Rights Act (CRA)

Theme: The Village vs. The Act. Goal: To legally empower women to reject the customary blackmail that children are the "property" of the father. For generations, Nigerian women have been held hostage by a single, terrifying sentence: "If you leave, you leave my children." In many of our cultures, particularly under Igbo and Yoruba customary law, the narrative is that children are the "property" of the father....

Day 10 of : The Economics of Exit — The ₦30,000 “Myth” & The Woman Who Forgot It

Today’s case study comes straight from my files—one of the most unforgettable moments of my legal career involving a woman I’ll call Mrs. T. Mrs. T told me her husband had abandoned her financially. We went to court ready to fight. But then, it turned out she had been receiving ₦30,000 every month for nine years. She didn't tell me. Why?...

Day 9 of : How Power, Patriarchy, Digital Violence & Nigeria’s Fragmented Marriage Laws Shape Women’s Fates

Nigeria does not have “one” marriage system. It has three: Statutory (Marriage Act) – monogamous, formal rights, custody protections. Customary – patriarchal, polygamous, family-controlled. Religious (mostly Islamic) – varies by jurisdiction. High-profile Nigerian marriages and divorces expose how these parallel systems create: Unequal rights Custody disparities Inheritance gaps Weaponised media narratives Digital abuse & reputational violence Delayed justice due to influence/power asymmetries…...

She Said "Too Much Sugar." They Said "₦5 Billion Lawsuit."

In any other country, a bad review is a customer service ticket. In Nigeria, it’s a crime scene.

On September 17, 2023, Chioma Okoli posted on Facebook that Erisco’s tomato paste was too sugary. She didn’t bomb a factory. She didn’t steal funds. She tasted a product and gave feedback.

The response?
The CEO sued her for ₦5 Billion.
The Police arrested her in Lagos and flew her to Abuja.
She was detained, charged with "Cyberstalking," and dragged through a year-long nightmare.

This is what State-Sanctioned Digital Violence looks like.
It shows exactly what happens when a woman tries to exercise her "Exit" option (rejecting a product) and the patriarchy drags her back in.

Here is the Unmute. Unbind. Unbreak. breakdown:

🔊 UNMUTE (The Act):
Chioma refused to be silenced by the "Big Man" complex. They wanted her to apologize and disappear. She refused. She kept her voice.

⛓️ UNBIND (The Legal Strategy):
The Police tried to dump a pile of screenshots and emails on the court to convict her. But her lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, used Section 84 of the Evidence Act as a shield.
The lesson: You cannot just print a Facebook post and call it evidence. You must prove the integrity of the computer that produced it. The Police couldn’t do it. They had to withdraw their evidence. Digital literacy is your legal self-defense.

🔥 UNBREAK (The Spirit):
They used the full weight of the state to break a pregnant woman. They failed. The system relies on our fear. When we refuse to break, their power crumbles.

The Takeaway:
Don’t let them bully you into silence. Know your rights. Understand the law.
If they come for your voice, make sure you know the Exit Strategy.

👇🏾 Join the Movement.
We are rewriting the rules of engagement for the Nigerian woman.

Day 8 – When “Exit” Is Criminalized

1. Executive Summary: When "Exit" Is Criminalized This case study examines the weaponization of the Nigerian criminal justice system by corporate entities to suppress consumer criticism. It focuses on the prosecution of Chioma Okoli, a female consumer who was arrested, detained, and prosecuted under the Cybercrimes Act for posting a negative review of a tomato paste brand on Facebook. The case serves as a primary exhibit of…...
