The monarchs land first. They reach the mountain forests of Michoacán in early November, right around Día de Mu***os, and local tradition says they carry the souls of loved ones coming home.

The humpbacks show up in December. Banderas Bay is where many of them have their calves, and the males sing songs that can last 20 minutes.

The snowbirds? Usually on a terrace, watching both.

Hot chocolate. Guacamole. Salsa. Pumpkin pie. Corn on the cob. Every one of them traces back to Mexico.

People here were growing squash about 10,000 years ago and corn soon after, and the rest of the world has been borrowing from Mexico's kitchen ever since.

Which one could you never give up? 👇

Every winter, hundreds of humpback whales swim south to Banderas Bay to mate, give birth and raise their calves in warm water. Most spend the summer feeding off California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. A few make the trip all the way from Alaska.

Whale-watching season typically opens December 8 and runs into late March. The babies show up more and more toward the end of the season.

Want a front-row seat? Book a licensed tour. The boats keep a respectful distance, and the whales put on a show anyway. 🐋

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian clients and friends! 🍁

For the past 19 years you have given us first visits, nervous questions, closing-day hugs, referrals to your neighbours, and "we made it" photos from the beach. We don't take a single one for granted.

We hope your table is full, your pie is homemade (or convincingly store-bought, though Costco pumpkin pie counts as homemade), and someone else is on dishes.

Settle a debate for us: pumpkin pie or butter tarts? 👇

Twenty-three years here means we've seen it all: the rainy seasons, the busy years, the quiet ones, and plenty of "quick questions" that turned into two-hour conversations over coffee (sometimes margaritas).

So ask us anything. Where to live, what it really costs, which spot has the best tacos. If we don't know, we know who does.

When Simon says, we listen. 🌀

Out of an abundance of caution for Hurricane Simon, our office is closed today, Saturday, October 10. We're still a WhatsApp message or an email away.

Please stay safe out there. Follow the official warnings and guidance from local authorities, and keep your pets and important documents close by in case you need to evacuate.

Today the office is wherever the couch is.
(Mimosas may or may not be part of our safety plan 🥂)

Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, is still spoken in Mexico today, and a handful of its words made it all the way into English by way of Spanish.

"Chocolate" probably came from Nahuatl too, but linguists are still arguing about the original word.

Which one surprised you most? 👇
