From 22nd to 24th July 2026, the Women Lawyers Association (WLA), in collaboration with the Girls First Fund (GFF), conducted a legal clinic aimed at ending child marriage and promoting the rights and protection of girls in Malawi.

This engagement brought together students, community mentors, and survivors of child marriage through a series of targeted activities designed to strengthen prevention, protection, and access to justice for the girls in the area.

For students, the legal clinic held on 24th July 2026 focused on raising awareness of child marriage as a human rights violation, educating learners on their legal rights as well as the available reporting and referral pathways. This session was facilitated by Martin Banda from WLA, who also encouraged the learners to remain in school and reach their full potential.

Community mentors were trained on survivor justice, teaching them practical skills to support survivors in a trauma informed and gender sensitive manner, and to strengthen referral and safeguarding systems in their communities. The engagement with survivors created a safe and empowering space for participants to learn about their legal rights and available remedies, access psychosocial support, share their lived experiences, and identify practical pathways towards healing, reintegration, and long-term empowerment.

Through this work and with support from its partners, WLA continues striving for communities where every girl is protected from child marriage, every survivor gets justice, and every child can stay in school and reach their full potential. We're grateful to GFF for their continued support and partnership.

WLA attends Al for Sexual Reproductive Health Convening in Kigali, Rwanda
From 24" - 26" March, 2026, Women Lawyers Association (WLA) Tech for Justice Project Officer Thoko Mafubza attended the Al for Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH) convening in Kigali, Rwanda.
Convened by Gender Rights in Technology (GRIT), this gathering brought together practitioners, technologists and policymakers from over 40 African countries, and
international organizations from more than 14 countries who work at the intersection of Al and sexual reproductive health.
The convening highlighted that many Al chatbots in gender-based violence (GBV) and SRH spaces lack contextual understanding because they omit localized knowledge, local languages, cultural context and easily accessible referral pathways. It is therefore important for organizations creating these chatbots, such as WLA, to ensure that this context is included in the design of the chatbots in order to best serve the intended user. Through this convening, WLA has gained valuable knowledge on designing and creating Al tools that prioritize safety and ensure that the context of their user is at the forefront.

From 23rd – 27th February 2026, the Women Lawyers Association (WLA) secretariat, with support from the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ), participated in a training on co-creation for their first responder’s chatbot. The training was facilitated by Gender Rights in Tech (GRIT).

The aim of this exercise was to strengthen the capacity of the WLA secretariat in involving community members to ethically create a chatbot that best serves them by considering their social, cultural and economic context.
The training focused on the theoretical make-up of the chatbot, as well as the theory behind co-creation. A key highlight of the training was the team’s visit to Ntchisi, where they conducted a co-creation with first responders and community members. This hands-on engagement allowed them to assess how to best integrate the potential users in creating a tool that bridges the access to justice gap for Malawians, particularly women and girls. We are grateful for CFJ’s support and the training provided by GRIT.

Below are highlights from the training.
