Climate change isn't distantโ€”it's happening now, in Liberia and here in Germany.

In midโ€‘June 2025, Liberia took center stage at the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum. Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, delivered a stark warning: over 100,000 Liberians were displaced by floods last year. Simultaneously, 60,000โ€“80,000 Burkinabรจ have migrated into Liberia in search of farmland. These dual pressures strain communities and parcel resources

Highlights from the first Berlin Climate Mobility Forum from June 16 to 17, 2025.

Our EPA chief reported two crises: massive flood displacement at home and migrant pressures on farmlandโ€”both stretching communities thin.

Then came action. Liberia signed an agreement to develop its first national climate mobility strategy. It includes data mapping, national dialogues, and disaster planning. Our lawmakers joined Africaโ€™s negotiators to secure climate funding and renewable energy support.

These steps matter beyond policyโ€”they mean stronger protections for families forced from homes and better resilience in rural areas.

Capitol Hill Campus, Monrovia, Liberia, August 22, 2024 | The University of Liberia (UL) has initiated the clearing process for students who have fulfilled graduation requirements ahead of its 104th Commencement Convocation, scheduled for September 2024.

Out of 2,290 students who applied for graduation, 2,122 have been cleared by the Business and Finance Office (BFO). These students are now advancing to the final phase of clearance with the Office of Enrollment Services (OES).

On August 20, 2024, the OES announced that the first batch of 310 students has been cleared, pending approval from the University of Liberia Faculty Senate. The clearing process will resume on August 26, 2024, with students across different categories celebrating this milestone.

Assistant Professor Aaron Sengbeh, head of the OES, confirmed that candidates from the class of 2022/2023 are being cleared for the upcoming convocation ceremonies, which will begin on September 16, 2024. Notably, six of these students are set to graduate with cm laude honors.

There are various categories of students seeking graduation, with Category One comprising those who had completed all processes and were awaiting clearance. Prof. Sengbeh noted that the majority of the applicants are from undergraduate programs, with candidates required to settle all financial obligations before final clearance, excluding the medical school.

Hereโ€™s a breakdown of the cleared candidates per college:

- College of Business and Public Administration: 817 applicants, 90 cleared.
- Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities: 348 applicants, 38 cleared.
- William V.S. Tubman College of Education: 154 applicants, 90 cleared.
- Thomas Jefferson Richelieu Faulkner College of Science and Technology: 267 applicants, 33 cleared.

In related news, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Agnes Reeves Taylor, has urged all members of the UL family, including faculty, staff, and graduating students, to take note of the latest graduation timetable and plan accordingly.

The 104th Commencement Convocation of the University of Liberia will take place from Monday, September 9, to Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the Fendall Campus in Louisiana, Montserrado County.
