Cybersecurity has a strong long-term outlook globally, but entry-level hiring is competitive. Employers need people who can protect cloud systems, investigate incidents, secure software and manage risk. The World Economic Forum identifies networks and cybersecurity among the fastest-growing skills through 2030. At the same time, ISC2 reports that employers are looking for specific skills while budgets still constrain some teams. A skills shortage does not mean every new graduate will quickly find a job.

The picture differs by country. The US projects 21% growth in information security analyst employment from 2025 to 2035. Australia projects 14.2% growth from 2024 to 2029 for its broader group of database, systems administration and ICT security specialists. In the UK, employers report cyber skills gaps, although cyber job postings fell in 2024. These figures measure different things and should not be treated as a single global vacancy count.

Credentials by career direction

Career stage or goal Useful preparation
Starting out A relevant degree or diploma in IT, computer science, networking or cybersecurity; networking, Linux, Windows, cloud and basic programming skills. ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) is an entry-level certificate with no work-experience requirement.
Security operations (SOC) Practise reading logs, investigating alerts and writing incident reports. Microsoft SC-200 aligns with security operations work.
Cloud security Learn one cloud platform deeply, including identity, permissions, logging and secure configuration. AWS Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals can establish cloud basics; AWS Security – Specialty is aimed at experienced practitioners.
Pe*******on testing Build strong networking, Linux, scripting and web security skills, then complete authorised practical labs. OSCP is a practical specialist credential to consider once those foundations are solid.
Audit, risk or leadership Develop experience with controls, assessments, documentation and stakeholder communication. CISA, CISM and CISSP are later-career goals; each has substantial experience requirements for certification.

For a Sri Lankan student, I would recommend this sequence: choose a solid IT or cybersecurity course, learn networking and systems thoroughly, earn one suitable foundation certificate, complete two or three documented practical projects, and seek an internship or related IT support role. Then choose a specialism and its credential based on actual job advertisements in the country where they intend to work.

A portfolio matters: for example, show how you configured a secure cloud environment, analysed sample security logs, or assessed a deliberately vulnerable practice application. Be ready to explain the risk, your method and your findings in clear English. ISC2 reports that skills-based assessments are common in hiring for junior cyber roles.

The advice to students: “A cybersecurity degree opens the door; practical ability, experience and communication help you get through it.”

28/09/2026

Sri Lankan students should start preparing for work before they arrive in Australia. The most effective approach is to combine a targeted job search with local experience, professional connections and strong communication skills. Australian employers commonly value attitude, communication and relevant experience alongside qualifications.

Tactics we can recommend

1. Prepare an Australian-style résumé for each role. Keep it clear, show achievements and availability, and address the requirements in the advertisement. Ask the institution’s careers team to review it.
2. Build a credible LinkedIn profile. Use a professional photo, describe projects and skills clearly, and connect with alumni, employers and people working in the chosen field. Keep public social media respectful and consistent with the professional image you want to present.
3. Use the campus network. Attend career fairs, employer presentations and workshops; check student-only vacancies; and ask lecturers and careers advisers about placements. Education providers offer these routes to employers.
4. Gain evidence of skills while studying. Apply for internships, course placements, industry projects and suitable volunteering. Keep examples of what you delivered so you can discuss them in interviews.
5. Network with a purpose. Attend relevant industry forums and events, introduce yourself briefly, ask informed questions and follow up on LinkedIn. An event such as an AFR summit or a Study Victoria activity is useful when it matches the student’s career goal.
6. Practise Australian workplace communication. Prepare a short introduction, rehearse interviews, respond promptly and arrive on time. Professional presentation and good manners help students make a strong first impression.
7. Apply selectively and follow up. Search employer career pages as well as job boards. Track applications, tailor each one, and use rejections to improve the résumé or interview answers.

A practical weekly target: make five well-matched applications, contact two relevant professionals, attend one career activity, and improve one demonstrable skill or project. This is a suggested routine, not a guarantee of employment.

Students must also check their own visa conditions before accepting shifts. A subclass 500 student visa generally limits work to 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session, with exceptions for some research students. International students have workplace protections, including applicable minimum pay, and should check proposed unpaid work carefully.

For AEMC Global, the message could be: “Choose your course with a career plan. Build your network from your first semester, gain practical experience, and learn how to show employers what you can do.” StudyPerth, Western Australia
