VERDICT DELIVERED: Death Penalty for Former IGP & Defence Secretary

In a historic judgment, the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar has sentenced former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando to death over their failure to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

The court found both guilty on 854 counts, including charges of criminal negligence, murder, and attempted murder for not acting on prior intelligence warnings. A majority of the bench Hon. Priyantha Liyanage and Thilakarathna Bandara HCJ held that their inaction directly contributed to the loss of 268 lives and injuries to 586 others.

Hon. Viraj Weerasuriya HCJ delivered a dissenting judgment, stating the prosecution failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.

This landmark verdict comes after the Supreme Court overturned a previous acquittal in 2022 and ordered a retrial.
