The Health Care Decisions Act, 2019 introduced Advance Healthcare Directives into Cayman Islands law. An Advance Healthcare Directive (also known as a living will or medical directive) means a legal document made by a person expressing that person’s health care wishes in the event that that person becomes mentally incompetent, including, for example, that that person —(a) wishes to be denied life-sustaining measures if that person becomes terminally ill; or (b) does not wish to undergo another stated type of health care. This applies to treatments including, but not limited to dialysis, tube feedings, or actual life support (such as the use of breathing machines). It also allows you to appoint a proxy to make specific healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. The person you name as a proxy should be someone who knows you well and someone you trust to carry out your wishes. Advance Health Care Directives allow you to:
• take the lead in making the important decisions about your end-of-life health care rather than depend on the government or hospitals to make decisions for you
• save money on costly healthcare measures you do not want
• relieve your family from stressful decision-making.
