On February 28, 2025, Mr. Pheng Thea, Partner and Attorney-at-Law of Abacus IP attended a ceremony at Chip Mong Insee Cement Corporation in Kampot province to destroy illegal and substandard goods. The event, organized by the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia (GDCE) and Chip Mong Insee Cement Corporation, aimed to safely and environmentally-friendly destroy these goods. It was presided over by Dr. Kun Nhim and Mr. Leang Khun, with attendance from various officials and representatives.

The GDCE has seized numerous illegal goods in recent years, including counterfeit items, goods confiscated by court order, and unclaimed goods. The destruction process includes crushing vehicle cabins, incinerating spoiled meat, and destroying narcotics.

Among the 107 items approved for destruction, weighing approximately 507 tons, are:

1. Intellectual property-infringing goods (2,315 kg)

2. Illegal goods (151 tons), including cigarette-related items and electronic ci******es

3. Substandard goods (93 tons), mostly consumer goods stored beyond the permitted period

4. Chemicals and hazardous substances (261 tons)

This effort by customs and excise officials helps protect consumers, citizens, the environment, and society.

The databases of Cambodian patents and industrial designs were launched to the public on April 29, 2024. This is a very significant development, as information on applications and registrations were not yet consistently publicly available. The information that was published was often incomplete and out of date. The lack of publication was problematic, as it was required by the Patent Law and applicants were required to pay the applicable publication fees.
