Let’s pause and look back...
There once was a neigborhood where people lived a happy life.
They had small shops and neighbors knew each other. They helped each other, they shared their foods, and invited the neighbors to their celebrations.
Criminals have a hard time committing crime because neighbors would inform others of potential risks. There weren’t many cars in the city and the weather was clean. There was a small but beautiful river nearby where neighbors go there to talk and share their food and children would play.
It was hard for someone to become poor because everyone took care of themselves.
Then, One day, the leadership decides to modernize the area. It posts banners of luxury shopping malls and tall buildings with promises of a better life. They start cutting down trees to build more buildings. Tall building blocks the beautiful view of the city.
You don’t see beautiful mountains and only tall buildings. People go to the area to enjoy their life and when they leave the area it is full of trash and is dirty.
Because so many people are coming to the city, crime increases as criminals see the opportunity to steal from the houses and shops.
Residents felt insecure and asked the police and department of justice for help. However, they cant do much because the same situation is happening everywhere and security is challenging.
Neighbors get into fights as some want to cut trees and demolish their house to build a taller one, so they rent and make more money, and some don’t want to trade their peaceful life with money. Prices of products increasing and some people force to leave, some are leaving because they don’t have a peaceful life anymore.
People who only think about money and getting rich but destroying the rights of other people buy houses and they keep building and destroying trees to make more money. Shopkeepers who stand with ethic of selling high quality products with a fair price become greedy and decide to make more money by selling their ethics and selling fake and low-quality products at high prices.
The river no longer exists, because the city hall builds a shopping center on the top of that. You can not see the sky because they cut down trees and due to pollution of cars, the sky is gray. This part of the city has luxury shopping, it is popular in the media and several people are coming to visit the area. There are rich people who are getting richer. But look at what they lost. Their friendly neighbors, security, peace, beautiful views, etc.
We are going too fast to build what we call a modern society, but I think we need to pause and look back at what we have lost.
We might have a similar story, so I think it is good time to pause and look back and see what we have and what we lost.
Are we going in the right direction?
Shouldn’t we go back to our valuable values?
