From humble beginnings as a mentoring, research and consulting firm in 1997, Innovative Lawyering, IL, has emerged as a centre of excellence in Mentoring, Research and Consulting. IL has come to be known the authoritative first reference name in Copyright, Constitutional, Education and Communications Law in Kenya and Africa. The organisation has carved a niche for itself in initiating an
d enhancing mentoring, legal research and advice in policy matters for corporates, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), governmental and inter-governmental bodies. The organisation has been researching and consulting in Kenyan Constitutionalism, Intellectual Property and Copyright Law, Education Law, Cultural Studies and Entertainment Law, Communication and Cyber Law, Innovation Law and Technology Transfer. IL takes the perspective that innovation, education, creativity and constitutional governance are critical parameters and ingredients for sustainable socio-economic and political development in Kenya and Africa. Among others, IL and SM have consulted for the Kenyan and other governments, including Ministries of Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology, Trade, Industrialisation, Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs. Other Government agencies include Kenya Copyright Board, Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI), National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), State Law Office (SLO), the Directorate of e-strategy in the Office of the President, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR), and the Committee of Eminent Persons (COEP) on constitutional review; Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) include the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya, and Kituo cha Sheria. Intergovernmental bodies include the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the East African Community (EAC), Consumers International (CI), the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
