The Kenyan Government has officially issued a call for public comments on the “Draft Kenya Artificial Intelligence and other Emerging Technologies Policy - July 2027”.

We’re proud to launch the first Africa-designed benchmark of AI governance assessing all 54 African states.

Co-researched by a network of 97 Africa AI Policy Fellows, the AAIGI evaluates 80 indicators to map the continent’s AI readiness.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 “𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐚𝐩.”

While roughly 15 states have adopted national AI frameworks, strategy diffusion is vastly outpacing enforceable laws, dedicated budgets, and measurable oversight. Every sub-region scores highest on Strategy & Vision and lowest on Implementation & Impact.

𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐚!

Last week, on the margins of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, Lawyers Hub convened an exclusive Ministerial Business Forum at the 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐀𝐈 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭.

We were honored to be joined by ICT Ministers from across Africa, alongside representatives from the World Bank and Google. The core framing of our roundtable was clear: AI is not solely a technology agenda, but a critical economic, development, and sovereignty agenda.

Our closed-door discussions focused on how AI in Africa is resourced, highlighting several strategic priorities:

•𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 Exploring how African states can pool resources to build and share compute capacity, keeping control within the continent and avoiding vendor lock-in.

•𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 & 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬: Discussing joint cross-border digital skills programs and the provision of cloud tokens and digital credits to lower the cost of experimentation for African startups.

•𝐓𝐡𝐞 “𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞” 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: Proposing the establishment of physical fundraising and deal-origination hubs for African founders at the UN General Assembly in New York, in Silicon Valley, and in Geneva.

•𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠: Aligning on funding strategies ahead of the World Bank’s upcoming annual development report, with a strong consensus that AI infrastructure must build lasting public value without leading to debt accumulation.

We left Geneva with a clear mandate: African AI development must build lasting capability, not just infrastructure. The official summit outcomes, panel recordings, and post-event materials will be shared in due course.

Yesterday in Geneva, our Founder and CEO, Linda Bonyo, had the privilege of speaking at the 𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻.

The event brought together an intimate group of women peers working in law, policy, and AI governance, to connect and exchange experiences on the AI transformation opportunities and challenges they are navigating.

AI is moving faster, and reaching further, than any single leader can navigate alone, which makes collaboration essential. AI transformation is also posing unique challenges and creating distinct opportunities for women in law-related roles across the globe, from how careers are evolving to the shape of policy, institutions, legal solutions, and beyond. This Global Circle provided a vital space to connect.

The AI for Breakfast City Circles support women in law to capture the opportunity and navigate the challenges of the moment, individually and in their organizations, communities, and the broader legal ecosystem.

As co-chairs from all thematic clusters gathered for the final closing session of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, our CEO Linda Bonyo took the stage and said the quiet part out loud. After co-chairing Cluster 4: Respecting, protecting and promoting human rights alongside Spain’s Minister for Digital Transformation, H.E. Mr. Óscar López Águeda, Linda delivered a closing reflection that had the entire room cheering.

She fearlessly addressed the “black box” of systemic exclusion:

African AI workers and advocates are spending thousands of euros just to be denied entry by the very algorithmic systems they are fighting to govern. It is time for transparency. It is time for an “AI Passport” that gives the Global South equal footing in these global discussions.

This morning at the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, our CEO Linda Bonyo had the distinct honor of co-chairing Cluster 4: Respecting, protecting and promoting human rights: transparency, accountability and human oversight.

This thematic breakout session focused on the reality that international law, including international human rights law, provides the foundation for global AI governance. The dialogue served as a critical platform for Member States, stakeholders, and the UN system to exchange experiences, practical tools, and good practices.

As AI reshapes the enjoyment of rights globally, discussions emphasized the urgent challenge of ensuring that existing accountability mechanisms and legal regimes can effectively protect rights in the age of AI. We are incredibly proud of Linda for helping lead this vital multistakeholder conversation to surface practical policy insights for the future of global AI governance.

Yesterday at the First Session of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, we hosted a critical side event: The Algorithms That Bedevil African AI Workers. Held at Palexpo Room G, the session confronted the reality that African data labellers, content moderators, and platform workers sit at the base of the global AI supply chain, often working under algorithmic management they cannot see, query, or contest.

The session was anchored by a powerful and moving testimonial from Frida Mwangi (Kenya Union of Gig Workers), who shared the lived realities of gig workers on the continent.

Following the testimony, we presented evidence highlighting documented cases of sub-poverty pay, traumatic exposure to harmful content, and accounts deactivated by automated systems without human review.

Our expert panel then discussed how we can move from documented harm to a working agenda, focusing on the newly adopted ILO Convention No. 193 on decent work in the platform economy.
