THE KENYAN VISA

A visa is an authorization attached on a passport that shows an individual has been granted legal entry into a foreign country for a specific period of time, usually short term.

The validity of a visa varies depending on the purpose of visit and the county’s immigration policies.

When a person’s visa expires, they are considered to be illegal residents and can only extend their stay by applying for a visa renewal.

There are countries however that do not require a visa on entry, referred to as visa free countries.
It is therefore important to carry out a thorough research on your country of destination from the official government website, to see if a visa is necessary and apply for one if need be.

In Kenya, the administration of visas is provided for by The Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011, and is operationalized through The Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Regulations, 2012.

Persons travelling to the Republic of Kenya can be categorized as shown below:

Category One: Foreign Nationals who do not require a Kenyan visa upon entry.

Category Two: Foreign Nationals issued with visas on application before entry/upon arrival into Kenya.

Category Three: Foreign Nationals whose visa applications are referred to the office of the Director General of Immigration Services for approval, otherwise known as referred visas.


WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PASSPORT AND A VISA?

A passport is an identification document issued by a government to its citizens that allows them to travel in and out of their home country.

A visa is attached to the passport by a foreign government allowing the passport holder entry into the country.
