Weka maji!

Every fruit tree we plant in the schools we visit is entrusted to the care of students and teachers. We are proud to see them take this responsibility seriously, nurturing the trees with dedication and commitment because they understand the lasting value these trees will bring to their schools and communities. 🍎🌿

This is what Hope for Literacy stands for, promoting quality education while championing environmental conservation.

It was amazing to see the scholars from Jua Foundation actively participate in the pasting phase of our pencil-making process! ✏️🌱 They gained hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of how waste newspapers are transformed into eco-friendly pencils. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills, explore sustainable practices, and see how creativity and innovation can turn waste into something valuable. Every step brings us closer to a greener future!

After newspaper cutting, we took the scholars from Jua Foundation through the next stage of pencil production: graphite pasting.

In this step, the graphite is dipped in glue and carefully attached to the cut newspaper strips. Another small insert is added to ensure each pencil achieves the correct size and strength.

It was wonderful to see the scholars actively participate in the process, gaining hands-on experience and discovering how waste newspapers can be transformed into something useful.

Stay tuned to see the scholars in action as they continue their journey into sustainable pencil production!

Every month, we recycle over 5 tonnes of waste newspapers, helping save more than 85 trees that would otherwise be cut down to produce wooden pencils. 🌱✏️

Small actions, big impact! Together, we’re turning waste into opportunity and creating a greener future.

We took a scholar from Jua Foundation through the first stage of pencil production: newspaper cutting! ✏️♻️ They learned how we carefully cut newspapers into precise strips using a specialized machine. Amazingly, just one two-page newspaper can produce three pencils, ensuring zero waste. A small centre insert is then added to achieve the correct pencil diameter, preparing the strips for the next stage.

Under our Hope for Literacy Campaign, we decided to focus on planting fruit trees in schools because of the incredible nutritional, environmental, and educational value they can offer.

Every time we visit a school and see teachers and learners eagerly getting their hands in the soil, planting trees, and committing to caring for them, we are reminded of why this work matters. ❤️

These trees will provide shade, improve the environment, support biodiversity, and, in time, provide nutritious fruits for learners.
