Today, on World Refugee Day, we celebrate the resilience and determination of refugees worldwide. We're honoured to share the story of one of our scholars, Clementine whose journey embodies the spirit of perseverance.
"Muhammad Ali once said, 'Impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion.' In a world full of adversities, it is imperative that we stay positive and strive to make good use of every opportunity given to us," she reflects.
As the eldest of four children born to Rwandan refugee parents who sought asylum in Kenya, her path has been marked by challenges. Her parents worked tirelessly to provide for their needs and ensure access to education, often seeking assistance from refugee support organisations.
Despite the odds, she has thrived. Now, as a recipient of our university education scholarship through the Head Start Africa, Kenya programme run by DLA Piper and the IKM Foundation, she's charting a course for a brighter future.
"Having reached this far has been a blessing. I am grateful to DLA Piper and the IKM Foundation for financing my university education. I have completed my first year of a BSc in Information Technology, through the financial support and mentorship that I continue to receive under their Head Start Africa, programme. It has had an impact on my personal growth as an individual. I am thankful for their support and their investment in my future."
Her story reminds us that with the right support and opportunities, refugees can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and achieve their dreams.
This World Refugee Day, let us celebrate the strength and perseverance of all refugees around the world.
